rendering issues in IRAY

hi guys

i am running into some issues when rendering and I'm not sure why they're being caused. hopefully some of you more experienced users can explain why this is happening

1- some black sploteches in my renders, on hair and eyes(the other eye also has it)

2- I cant get SSS to work no matter how much i increase the slider

3 - i really cranked up samples but i still get aliased shadows and lip artifacting. not sure how to fix these either

thanks in advance

Is the figure moved away from the centre of the world (the position at which it loads, by default)? Have yiu hidden parts of the model in any way?

  • Check the instancing optimisation setting in the render settings, having it on memory will cause these issues even if the model is at world center. Set to auto or speed.

Also check your filtering, you have lots aliasing in the hair, the standard setting is gaussian at 1.50, I use mitchel at 0.98, some use mitchel at 1.0, find a setting you like, turning it off is a bad idea.

I'll upload default shader to SSS mini tut so you can learn why you can't get it working.

There is a partial workaround for the black-in-eye problem. If you increase the eye moisture settings it may get rid of most of it. It is possibly a problem of the interaction of the sclera and eye moisture geometries (perhaps the detail is too fine for the software to make sense of it). I've had it happen to three characters and I was able to make most of the black go away with this one adjustment. I think the problem may all have been HD characters, but I'm not sure.

I have sometimes been able to get rid of the forehead splotches by adjusting the hair settings in the Parameters Pane, so this might also be a problem of geometries interfering with each other (like the hair and the head). Try moving the hair back or up and do some small test renders to see if the shape on the forehead changes. If it does, then you can adjust until you get rid of it (hopefully).

These are not solutions, just workarounds, but until the problem is identified and corrected, that's all we have.

Try these before you move things off center. You need to find out if this works FIRST before you start adjusting the positions of all the assets in your set. If it doesn't work, then try the more global positional adjustments.

The hair/forehead issue is a problem with the hair cap. It needs to be expanded slightly.

thanks for all the hints. You guys are amazing

i tried a few things, but it was the instancing optimization. setting it to speed fixed it.
