Something I've really struggled with - viewport lighting.

RobinsonRobinson Posts: 751

As soon as my scene gets to some level of complexity, with emissive surfaces and maybe lights and cameras, I often struggle to get light in the viewport.  I navigate it in almost complete darkness.  There's no "headlamp" option on the standard view configs as far as I can see (perspective, left, right, etc.).  What I want is for it to have basic, default lighting in the scene whilst I'm posing and moving things about.  When I switch out to iRay everything is correctly lit of course. It's just the viewport going black I'm struggling with.

What am I doing wrong?

Btw:  As a UI developer myself, I like to think that if it isn't completely obvious, something isn't quite right.

Holy... where did that come from?  It works.  But is that available in the UI?

Not by default, but if you hit F3, then on the left side scroll down to the window section and expand it. You can drag drop it to any of the toolbars or menus on the right side.

Window>Preview Lights. It's on (DS gives a preview of the scene lighting) by default, turning it off gives a headlamp instead (but the scene will still render with the lights, not the headlamp).

It's so obvious now you point it out.  I wonder why it's not on the view menu though...

Oh ha, yeah I missed it in that menu too.
