Problem with GPU rendering of DAZ' Private Pool

I purchased Private Pool ( https://www.daz3d.com/private-pool ) the other day, loaded up the sample scene, added a G8 figure and rendered.  It was taking a long time so I checked the log and it had an out of memory error for the graphics card (RTX 2060, 6 GB) and so was using the CPU.

Thinking I had too much stuff in the scene, I loaded the building prop alone, applied the iRay mat and rendered with Task Manager open.  The GPU memory suddenly shot up to 6 GB, and it rendered a noisy stripe perhaps 30 pixels wide at the bottom of the image in 17 seconds.  

I updated the drivers to  445.75 and tried rendering with OptiX Prime on and off to no avail. It doesn't seem like a very complicated scene to render, except perhaps the caustics of the water.

    Hi,

    I just loaded the Private Pool sample scene and hit Render: no out of memory error that I can see (2080Ti).

    It is suuuuuuper slow to render (like 3 iterations per minute), but it seems to be using the GPU.

    Do you have 8 GB on your card?  I have a 2060 which has 6 GB

    Geometry uses relatively little VRAM. Textures use a lot. For some reason this set includes 8k textures for everything. You can cut almost all of those down to 1k with no loss of visual detail.

    Except that when you have high res textures you can downsize them, but if you only have lower res textures you can't make them higher res if you need a closeup. So if only one version is included it's better to provide the high resolution one as it will be more versatile.

    Just because it drops to cpu on your card doesn't mean it won't render on more capable GPUs. You have the low end RTX after all and no more Vram than a 980TI.

    boubakeurjohn in the third post appears to have it drop to CPU on his 2080Ti; either that or my CPU is rendering it faster than his GPU......

    It wouldn't be the first product released that wouldn't render on an 11Gb card. I've gotten refunds on a couple because of that.

    This PA tends to go nuts with memory requirements.  I had issues with their Behind the Scenes product. One hint as to which sets may cause problems like this is if the promo renders don't include any characters.  If the PA is able to fit in characters, you probably will be, too.   That's not any kind of sure thing, but it is a red flag.  Sets look a lot better if they are shown populated with figures.  On the other hand, Ultrascenery renders really easily but the promos aren't populated.  BUT!  It is used in dozens of renders in the Gallery, while the Private Pool isn't referenced by any gallery images at all.

    Anyway, I own this pool set, and will give it a whirl after my current render finishes.

    So, I loaded up the scene and went to render the sample scene provided with nothing but the set in the scene.  I was left with 12% memory on my 8 Gb GPU.   That's not enough for a haired & clothed character.  Textures took up 4,8 Gb, which is a whoe lot for an empty set.  After using Scene Optimizer on only the 8k maps, leaving the others at 4k, that came down to 1.4 Gb.  The biggest culprits were the 20 Mb normal maps, twice the size of the diffuse maps.  That's just silly for the kind of scene it is.  Were you stricken by the fine texturing in the promos?  Neither was I.  I mean if the Red Crow Inn can get by with 4k maps, then this bikini background should be able to, as well.

    Anyway, if anyone doesn't have Scene Optimizer, Irfanview has a batch resample tool, and it's free.  Might as well save yourself some disk space while you're at it, and overwrite the originals.

    It's an okay set, which is why I bought it, although IIRC it was part of some sale get-it-for-3-bucks promos we had during March Madness.  It's not something I'd pay release dollars for.  But geez, PAs need to remember that most of their customers are hobbyists and don't run 24 Gb rigs.  And since it's a DO, Daz should have known better, too.

    I attached the scene intended to showcase those 8k maps.  This is after reducing them to 4k.  Whatever.

    hello, thank you very much for purchasing Private Pool and I hope you find this product useful.
    I just wanted to give you my opinion and some information on the size of the textures.

    When you work on a project (game, movie, pub etc) you know at the start the size of the textures that you will need for the environment or the scenes in which your product will be used.
    On the other hand when you make a product which you sell on a shop like on DAZ3d you do not know what use the customers will have of your products.
    They are going to make wide shots, close ups, you don't know.
    Not knowing, I prefer to provide larger textures in an attempt to respond to both possibilities.
    For those who do not need large textures it is very easy to resize the textures for the use they have. It would be more difficult for those who need large size to enlarge too small textures
    It's a choice and I assume it!

    ah, and no i don't go crazy ....
    Do you think it is necessary for a wide shot to have a texture for the head of 4096X4096 or even a texture of 2048X2048 for teeth? I think not, but the day you need to do a close-up you will be happy to have them, same for the Private Pool
    As for the space taken up on the hard drive, I don't think that is a good review. Given the price of hard drives these days .... (and it is very easy to remove duplicates after your renderings)

    You can also use (as on the image of the pst above) the image compression provided with Iray, but that risks giving bad results as we can see on the image above.

    Thanks for responding.  The issue isn't space on the hard drive, but GPU memory used by the maps. 

    It would have been nice to have lower resolution textures also included as a choice, rather than having to create them manually or purchase an additional product in order to have scenes utilize the GPU when rendering.  The average user doesn't have lots of GPU memory, (I just recently upgraded to a 6GB card from 4GB) and there is no minimum hardware requirement listed in the product description...
