I"m just trying to figure what comes with 4.6. I understand that it has there is a genesis 2 male and female. Is this something that comes with the program, or does it have to be purchased separately? What else would have to be purchased separately, not counting figures and props made by vendors but additional features that would add to the program that would bring the 4.6 to deluxe capacity? I'm just trying to figure out what else is extra. Any info appreciated, thanks.

    DS4.6 comes with:
    1) Genesis Starter Essentials -- this includes Genesis 1 male/female/child shapes and textures, several sets of clothing and hair, some scenery, and a dragon
    2) Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials -- G2F, textures, hair, clothing, and a scene
    3) Genesis 2 Male Starter Essentials -- G2M, textures, hair, clothing and a scene
    4) Default Lights and Shaders for DAZ Studio -- uber lights, Sub-Surface Scattering and ubersurface shader

What sort of art are you looking to do, and what if any content from earlier figures do you have? The included content gives you a lot to try out and work with.

Well, it comes with a lot. But I kinda know what you mean. There are add-on's you may or may not want for Daz Studio. Look in software under plug-ins and utilities. You can search around and compare the prices of what you personally would want to have with the price of software like Poser. The lowest I've seen Poser Pro 14 going for is around $400. The cheap version is on sale right now at Renderosity. V4 works better in Poser than Genesis and Genesis 2 reportedly. So you need to think a bit about what figures you would want to use. If you are a beginner, then free often looks best. Your question is will the add-ons end up costing enough to make Poser Pro look worth it I imagine. I'm new and I haven't needed any addon's that Daz Studio didn't come with yet. I have spent almost $500 so far but that was on content to play with. So I got Daz Studio for free, joined the platinum club, and got a lot content I really wanted to use for the same price as just getting out the door with Poser. I do not regret that for a second. Yeah, I drool over some of the Poser Pro features, but I prefer using Genesis and Genesis 2 and items made for them. I like that I don't have to pay a high price for content I don't want and features I'd never get around to using. That's what I ended up picking and the result so far. But your needs and wants may be different from mine. Just hunt around and see what features and addon's catch your eye. Think about how you personally want to use the software and what you want to make with it. I think it probably isn't too fair to compare the Free Daz Studio to Poser Pro 2014. You do get a huge discount on Carrara with Platinum club membership though and it does a lot more too, and for less of an investment.

I think the only thing absolutely required would be one of the 'Hair and Fur' plugins.

You might also want to improve on the included 'Animate Lite' if you're into animation.
Similarly, upgrade to the full dynamic cloth plugin, if you want any access to the cloth settings.

If you've pushed the included UberEnvironment to its limits and you're not into the minutiae of the shader mixer, then there's more advanced lighting available.

If you are interested in external rendering then there is a choice of translators.

Almost forgot, if you still want to use that huge collection of textures, morphs and wardrobe from your old DAZ figures (all the way back to V3) then you may need the various 'fitting to Genesis' products.

thanks for your reply. I've used DAZ Studio off and on since 2012, and have now learned that they have an updated version with the Genesis 2 models. I just wanted to make sure that the Genesis 2 was not something that you had to purchase separately.

I remember when I first stated with DAZ Studio, if you needed to make better facial expressions, then you had to get the face morphs, if you wanted to use clothing and characters created for V 4.2, then you had to get the complete V 4.2, because some of the stuff that I wanted to do could only be done with Stephanie or some such other things.

As far as the art that I do, I want to create people, and I just find that the original female models are sometimes a little "too endowed" in breast and butt department, and usually just want to create models that look like real people. And for that you need to get additional add ons just to bring this stuff down and make it look real. So, I just wanted to learn what I was in for :) Thanks again.

Well, the cost is not the factor, I just wanted to know what to get to make sure I had everything for tweaking figures available to me. Also, wanted to know that the Genesis 2 figures came with the program, not an add on like V 6 and M6.

The lowest I've seen Poser Pro 14 going for is around $400. The cheap version is on sale right now at Renderosity. V4 works better in Poser than Genesis and Genesis 2 reportedly. There are some things that Poser is good for, however, I picked up Poser 7 for about $15, and new and legitimate copy. It worked for the project I was doing. But continuing I wanted to do projects with DAZ Studio, because there are a lot of things that are better than Poser. I may not have a lot of experience with Poser or DAZ Studio, but I did have a lot of experience with Bryce and Vue d'Esprit, and just as a for instance, the lighting in DAZ Studio is light years ahead of Poser. it's possible that they may have updated it, but the interface in Poser has always been clunky, even when I used it back in the early 2000s.

I'm new and I haven't needed any addon's that Daz Studio didn't come with yet. I have spent almost $500 so far but that was on content to play with. Well, it's a great program and you can't beat that it's free. Certainly the concept of one figure being able to conjure up a universe of all kinds of characters from children to monsters to everything else in between is something that also appeals to me.

Yeah, I drool over some of the Poser Pro features, but I prefer using Genesis and Genesis 2 and items made for them. I like that I don't have to pay a high price for content I don't want and features I'd never get around to using. That's what I ended up picking and the result so far.

I*'ve no idea what the features of Poser Pro are, I"m sure I could do good work with DAZ 3D, I just wanted to know what else one needed to bring out the best in the program

But your needs and wants may be different from mine. Just hunt around and see what features and addon's catch your eye. I don't compare, I'm just trying to make sure that I have everythign that DAZ Studio needs. But thanks for the head's up on Poser Pro.

Yes, this is the kind of info I need. Definitely stuff like this is necessary to all kinds of figures.

You might also want to improve on the included 'Animate Lite' if you're into animation.

I'm just interested in still images, animation is just another level of insanity I don't need right now... :)

Similarly, upgrade to the full dynamic cloth plugin, if you want any access to the cloth settings.

This is very useful info as well. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to put a dress on one of these models and you can only do so much if you don't have a plugin.

If you've pushed the included UberEnvironment to its limits and you're not into the minutiae of the shader mixer, then there's more advanced lighting available.

Well, I've explored the possibilities of lighting in the earlier version, so I would have to explore that again. it's been a while.

If you are interested in external rendering then there is a choice of translators.

Well, I don't have that problem, most everything will be new. Thanks for your info, appreciate it.
