hey guys and gals bit new here still and hard to know how to "search" for things. I am looking for an adjustable/morphable hair system (not look at my hair) but mesh based rather. Any that you guys know of I can buy so I can make different hair do's and styles?? help would be really appreciated. So far this system has been a boon for me and only leap left to cover is a decent hair system for characters I am doing. thanks for any help you can muster.

For hair you basically have 3 choices. 'Conventional' transparency mapped hair, 'fibermesh' (polygonal hair created in programs like zbrush) and the two curve based systems (LAMH and Garibaldi).

Transmapped hair comes with some morphs, but there is no 'universal' hair that you can shape/style any way you want. The basics are 'fixed' and other than color, not all that changeable.

Fibermesh, can be just about anything...in the program it is created in, but once set up to be used in Studio, it is pretty much a 'fixed' item. Some can have morphs, but unlimited styling isn't going to be among them. Also they tend to have high to astronomical poly counts.

The curve based options have unlimited styling potential and if/when a physics plugin hits the store, dynamics. They also both have the ability to export an obj (again high to astronomical poly count) of the finished style.

But, what you want, does not exist and probably won't ever exist'

I figured that might be the case. No worries though I look through the existing hair systems see what I can get. Thanks for the info. I agree the high/astronomical polycounts just aren't worth it even if the characters in the project I am working on are not being animated and only posed.

I use multiple hairs sometimes, matching the textures the only work and requires a bit of Gimpshopping for me.
you can hide bits of each like skull caps with the polygon group editor or opacity slider too.

Here is my Tip for a New User, check out the PC item Hairs first, even if you are not a Platinum Club Member they are the lowest cost hairs and you can get a good mix of styles for what one Hair with all the bells and whistles will cost. Often some of the PC hairs are VERY nice sets with many morphs and textures, some times not. To me often a simple to use hair set is better than one that takes many morph dials to get just right. It all comes down to you, how you pose the figure and set up the camera and other things can make a easy item work just as well as a more morphable one will.

Kozaburo also has some excellent free hair. They're designed for older models, so you'll have to fit them manually, but they are as good as most of the commercial hair, and better than some.

Jaderail is definitely right, though, the platinum club hairs are a great deal. If you get serious about this hobby, you'll end up buying them all and then find yourself looking at the more expensive stuff. And then buying it. ;) You really can't have to many hair models. Hurrah for wigs! :)

Oh, and I can definitely recommend AprilYSH's hair. She's the Stonemason of hair - absolutely fantastic stuff that I usually can't afford. But the stuff I do buy I find myself using a lot. (Better a $20 item you use, than four $5 items you don't...)

There are some hairs in the store with morphs that allow for a variety of different styles and looks. Anything by 3Dream and Mairy is likely to include a number of different options, for instance. And if you are looking for (or don't mind) a more stylized look, both of these offer a ton of variety for the price: Sadie and Sam Hairstylez and Hairdresser Modular Hair.

And I second (or third) the recommendation for AprilYSH hair also.

thanks guys and gals. this is all very valuable info. thanks I was looking at the PC section and they have a ton of options. So I am going to look there first and then possibly go to april's stuff as her stuff is pretty damn impressive. So wish me luck as I get new info on the characters from my client.
