Pretty dumb Questions, about products to buy and what I already have?
So when we downloaded this for free, we got genesis right? Not genesis 2? Are they the same?
Suppose I wanted to buy something a bit more detailed in figures. Who or what should I buy?
It's confusing because some are redesigns of genesis 2 or michael 6, etc.
I bought a figure and I was like, (oh did someone tweek this? I could have reformed a figure myself. On two I thought I was purchasing upgrades to the software rather than just a redesign of what features I have.
Any recommendations as to what is the best in your opinion?
Also recommendations on changing facial features would be appreciated.
I hope this isn't forbidden to ask because this could help my decision in purchasing something.
thanks

You should have Genesis and Genesis 2 starter essentials. If you do not, check your product library under your account.
It is hard to say which figures are best. That depends on what you like and what you want to do with it. Many like the original genesis figure because it can morph into male or female figures. Which ever figure you decide on, I do suggest getting the morph packages for that figure. For example if you choose genesis, get the male and/or female head and body morphs for that figure. The starter packages you get for free have limit morphs. Some characters will even require the morphs to work properly.
Mike and Vicky are morphs of base figures. Some figures are morphs of those figures and will state that in the requirements.
Your best bet is to figure what kind of characters you want then browse the store. Keep an eye on the requirements, they will tell you what figure you need and any morph packages you may need for that character.
This may all seem a bit confusing at first but you will get the hang of it.
When you "purchased" the free program, it came with a few content installers. One has Genesis in it; and the other has a collection including G2F and G2M [Genesis 2 Female and Male].
There are some bundles which can be purchased which have the basics for morphs, a few clothing items, hair, etc for the figures.
There are some products to enable one to use the skins and/or clothing items from one figure to another.
Figures "5" work with Genesis.
Figures "6" work with the Genesis 2 figure(s).
It is not forbidden to ask questions ... this is what the forums are for ;-)
If you haven't already, financially it is a very good idea to buy a PC membership as the cost of many items are greatly reduced. Many clothes and hair for example are available for about $2. There are also monthly coupons and some more freebies :-)
If you purchase the HD morphs for either G2 figure, those are mesh upgrades of a kind for the figures.
While yes one could theoretically make much if not all of what is sold in the store, it does take awhile to learn how ... and then too, what is time worth? It can take a week or months to make some of the items that are sold in the store and for all that, the prices are excellent.
With DAZ Studio you get both the Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 starter essentials. This gives you the base Genesis 1 character (that can morph into either male of female characters), the Genesis 2 Female base character and the Genesis 2 Male base character. These characters come with skins and a limited selection of clothes and props. There are lots of free clothes, props, and other things that work with them that you can get for free at other sites.
There are standard morph packs that are good to purchase, whether you want to create your own body shapes or buy characters. For Genesis 1 these are Genesis Evolution Morphs. For Genesis 2 they are Genesis 2 Female(s) Morphs Bundle and Genesis 2 Male Morphs Bundle. There also are some free morph bundles available and you can purchase more advanced morph bundles.
Characters like Michael 6 are custom morphs on top of a base character. In the case of Michael 6, he is a morph of Genesis 2 Male. The morph changes the body shape, and Michael 6 also includes a skin texture.

There are some free morphs available at ShareCG and some really nice free clothes. The free morphs don't replace the Daz ones but they are a great add-on. I second the Platinum Club membership. Buy it first and all the Daz3d products are like 30% off, plus you get a coupon every month for a Daz3d item. It really will save you a ton. I have really made out well with the $1.99 items. The membership paid for itself many times over. Also, there are sales. So if you really want something, put it in your wishlist so its easy to check and see if it goes on sale. Sometimes you can't wait for a sale, and that's okay too! I am also trying to do this on a smaller budget and the sales and the platinum club have netted me a lot of content for a great price. Oh did I mention the platinum club gives something a way every week??? I better go see what this weeks download is....
