content catagories, tags, smart content, etc problems.

Ok I don't really use smart content much since it seems to be buggy. However, recently categories doesn't seem to work any more. Search doesn't work at all (even if I just search for file names I KNOW are there). I have tried reimporting metadata to no avail. Smart content doesn't show either usually, although sometimes after several restarts of studio it shows up, but nothing else. The CMS seems to stop on its own and OFTEN. I end up restarting it.

I am not sure what more to do. I think CMS is also used for categories and tags, but I can't seem to add/change/edit them any more. I am assuming the database is corrupted and needs a rebuild. I did the reset in the database maintenance, and a reimport but that didn't help either.

Any help is appreciated.

Snap! Could this be a virus?

It is not a virus, that I am certain of.

Windows Vista 64 bit, AVG but disabled

I actually did manage to fix it myself. Found on another forum (Hivewire3d http://hivewire3d.com/forum/showthread.php?820-CMS-seems-to-be-broken-in-DAZ-Studio-all-of-a-sudden).

The long and short of it is I:
    Stopped Content manager Service
    Uninstalled Content manager
    Reinstalled content manager
    stopped content manager
went to content manager database folder (varies but usually program data/daz3d/contentmangerservice/database
moved those files out (just for backup use)
    restarted content manager service
    restarted daz studio
in content libary scan all known folders and let it finish
in content library db maintenance reimport all metadata

And so far so good. But WHEW, this should be easier, and there should be a repair option lol.

Also it is interesting that if the database is hosed you can't even search content library, add tags, categories, or anything. Tags and categories I figured, BUT search for file names as well? That surprised me.

Ok, I'm going to try this too. But how do you install the CMS alone? It's part of the Studio install surely?

Yes, this surprised me too! It's a ridiculous design fault that you can't even search on the content file names?! They must have deliberately disabled that, as it's a fundamental part of Windows!

the hivewire3D post recommends reinstalling studio completely. Oddly enough this was something I suggested early on in my thread, but Jaderail told me it was not relevant to the CMS problems

    Depending on how you installed
    C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\cms
    or
    C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\Content Management Service

    Ok found it. C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\cms

    doesn't exist for me. Under C:\program files (x86)\DAZ 3D I only have a folder called DAZStudio4

Did you install with DIM. Updated my post above to add another location

that's the exe that runs the CMS (I know where that is), not the install file.

What i asked was how to re-install the CMS without re-installing Studio

If you didn't install with the DIM, you can't...

Yep, I installed it with DIM so then the file was in C:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D\DAZ3DIM1\cms but if you didn't use Daz Install manager, then yes you can't install it separately. In that case you have reinstall DS fully. I just went this way since it was a little faster and worked well.

    -----------------
I could of course search it in windows explorer, but not content library. And again which is ODD. But at least it is fixable, even if a royal pain in the backside.

Not deliberately disabled — all the functions that have failed are the ones driven by the CMS, or dependent on the database generated by the CMS. When the CMS goes >clunk< then all those functions stop as well, and there are some surprising ones. Autofit (although manually invoking it still works), all content searches, Categories view, Products view, as well as the more obvious Smart Content view.

There's also some saves that can't happen...I don't remember what, off the top of my head, but most deal with content creation.

Oh I agree, it isn't deliberate. Something else I forgot to mention: the first thing I noticed was sometimes CMS (content management service) would stop by itself. At the time, I just closed DS, restarted CMS, then reopened DS and all was well. But I should have taken that as a sign of things to come.

I have also read else where to NEVER EVER have Daz Studio running when installing content of any kind. Now I don't think I did, but I suppose it is possible I forgot and had it running by accident (I tend to be old fashioned and have programs not running when installing plugins, content, etc if possible). Or when I first installing DS via DIM I had a problem and had to uninstall, then reinstall DS. I think it was caused by DIM trying to install too many items at once (it installs automatically after downloading by default, I turned that off afterwards). Possibly not, but I am starting to wonder. In any case if I have further experiences (and if I find any other causes for CMS corruption) I will be sure to post them.

A butterfly flapped it's wings in Africa...

It's a database...and a rather mediocre server...all you need to do is sneeze at the wrong time...BAM...corrupted. It might be easier to find things that WON'T cause it to corrupt...

Yeah, that is a bit sarcastic...but the point is, like hard drive failure, it will happen. It's not IF...but WHEN.

Ok, so I get that I need the CMS to work to search (seems stupid when regular old windows can easily search on filenames, but hey!).

I can't rebuild the database (I have tried)
    re-import metadata doesn't work either
So I have no search function active and no smart content showing.

    This makes Studio virtually unusable.

Can someone PLEASE help with this?! There must be something i can do, surely?!
