    Hey Mark,
I just now saw this thread. Thank you so much for posting all of your gorgeous portraits and for the support of mine and InaneGlory's products. It is the biggest thrill for me to see my backgrounds used so often and so well. I look forward to what ever you do next.
    cheers!

Can never have too many backgrounds. Thank you for all the great backgrounds.

This render is exactly the same as the previous one, but using the Letizia for Lilith 6 skin texture. Letizia is only a skin texture. I did not change the lighting at all. You can see the Letizia skin is a little brighter and is starting to blow out in the hightlights. Both the Lilith and Letizia default skins have the diffusion strength at 50% and the SSS strength at 75%, but the Lilith skin has the diffusion texture in the SSS color, which apparently reduce the SSS strength.

To correct the blow out of skin highlights, you would reduce the light intensity a little or you could reduce the SSS strength.

It also looks like there are some issues with the eye reflection surface on Letizia at gamma 2.2. This is not unusual. Lots of characters eye reflections need to be adjusted when rendering at gamma 2.2.

Today I tried out Rhia for Lilith 6. I had a lot of problems getting a render at gamma 2.2 that I liked at all. The skin seemed to be dark. Finally, I essentially just started over and from the textures and set the skin up in the AoA shader. I'm not 100% happy with the result, but it is much better than what I was initially getting. I may do some more experimenting to see if I can improve on this.

    Also used in this image:
    Mademoiselle Hair
    Bellissima for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    Belle Textures for Bellissima

these are awe-inspiring Mark128, some things I didn't know as well. I didn't look to be honest. So the SSS stuff can be varied, rather then just on/off like most of the figures that come with both options. It makes sense now that I think about it, why not for more then just stone and light effects. Or even hair, glossy transparent strands, hmm.

To get great renders, you need to learn how to adjust the materials, but you need to learn how to do lighting first. How something looks is a combination of the lighting and the materials. Most of the materials of the products in the store are adjusted to render in DAZ at gamma 1.0 with reasonable lights. I do most of my renders at gamma 2.2. Some things render pretty well at gamma 2.2 out of the box. Some things need a few tweaks in the material. Occasionally they need more than little tweaks.

Last night I mentioned I had some problems getting good looking renders with Rhia at gamma 2.2. Here is what I was talking about. This is with very simple lighting, one distant light and the Advanced Ambient light. The intensities are adjust a little differently for gamma 1.0 and 2.2. As you can see, Rhia looks great at gamma 1.0 and kind of ... like a zombie at gamma 2.2. I have noticed similar effects on a few other characters, though not this drastic.

Here is gamma 1.0 and 2.2 renders with my reworked skin. I was basically adjusting it at gamma 2.2. It is probably a little too pink at gamma 1.0 and I'm not completely happy with the gamma 2.2 results yet, but Rhia is no longer a zombie.

Interesting little discovery. If you compare the Aoife Hair 2 between the gamma 1.0 and 2.2 renders above, you will notice the hair looks thinner at gamma 2.2. I was puzzling over what could cause this. Finally I noticed that the opacity map on this hair was set at gamma 0.0. I believe that causes the map to be gamma corrected. I think control maps (bump, specular, opacity, ....) are suppose to be set at gamma 1.0. The diffusion textures are set at gamma 0.0 so they get gamma corrected.

Anyway, here is a render with the opacity map gamma on the Aoife hair changed to gamma 1.0. It still looks a little thinner than the gamma 1.0 render, but it is much better.

I have some other hairs that look thin at gamma 2.2, and I'm guessing they have the same problem.

After fiddling for a while I decided to just leave the skin as I had it. My settings don't render very well at gamma 1.0, but I do most renders at gamma 2.2.

I discovered the Mademoiselle Hair used in this version also had the opacity map at gamma 0.0. It looks a little better when I make the gamma 1.0. I also adjusted the hair morphs a little.

Sorry I got a tad distracted in Ms Paint there, lol.

That is kind of what I noticed with lots of stuff, from purchased sets to figures. The ironic part in your renders is that rock wall looks good in all the gamma variations.

Agreed about the lighting, I just started playing with the "Surfer guy" UE2 thing in some renders, for about this entire month when I had time. I notice some times UE 2 likes being at 25% to 50% intensity, and others it likes 50% to 75%. And never over 75% when I have a tone of other lights.

This is Sabby Brenda available at Renderosity. She is a G2F/V6 character. She uses 0.7 V6 Body and 0.38 V6 head, but the description at Renderosity says "looks great without [V6] as well". I didn't try here without the V6 shape, so can't say. The skin uses V5 UVs, so it will work fine on any G2F character. It will also work on Genesis 1 if you own V5.

The skin comes with AoA SSS shader skin presets, like most other recent Sabby characters.

    Also used in this render:
    Desideria Hair
    Fashion Chunky Jewelry I
Francesca Dress for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    Francesca Dress Textures
Photo Studio - Point and Shoot 2

wow, Sabby has allot of stuff there. I think of cute little feathered creatures when I think of Renderosity, I never notices Sabby there before using an external search for the PA.

I like that render, it makes the rest of that outfit and jewelry look good. It is nice to have lighting presets that work well with most stuff, like that surfer guy tutorial one I keep going to for outdoor scenes.

Admittedly, I feel bad I have yet to really put DestinysGarden's shaders threw there paces yet. I've been in ketchup mode the past few weeks.

There are a number of PAs that sell some products here, but also have big stores at Renderosity. Silver and OutOfTouch are a couple others that come to mind.

Renderosity is a pretty complete store. They probably do have "little feathered creatures" but that is a small part of their offerings. (IMHO Ken Gilliland makes the best birds, and his store is now at HiveWire.) Renderosity is more Poser and V4/M4 oriented. Lots of their PAs only use Poser and are not familiar with DAZ Studio, so you have to read the descriptions carefully to make sure the product will work in DAZ Studio. There are now G2F/M products appearing at Renderosity, and almost all of those work well in DAZ Studio.

Not completely happy with the Brenda pic yet. Still doing some tweaking to see if I can get something I like better.

I have 10-15 characters I bought in the V4/M4 80% off sale that I have not downloaded and installed yet. Trying to get caught up.

I like this one better. I think this is the final image for Brenda.

I increased intensity of the main light, which is a rim light in this setup. I also changed the shader on the metal in the necklace to make it bright gold.

Tried out Ava HD for Lilith 6 last night. The Ava body shape uses 100% of the Lilith 6 shape and the skin uses Victoria 6 UVs, so the character requires both Lilith 6 and Victoria 6.

I also used the Cyra hair. I think this must be fiber mesh hair. The product page says "Please note: Longer render times may be encountered with this hair style." I don't think there is any "may" about that. The Cyra hair renders very slowly. The render time for this image at 2000x1500 was 1 hour and 21 mins. I would have expected more around 30-40 mins.

    Also used in this render:
Cyra Hair for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    TEC5 for Genesis 2 Female(s)
Dead World Piercings Genesis by SickleYield at Renderosity
Photo Studio - Point and Shoot 2

I have been working with Modern Muses Fatima. She is an older V4 character that I picked up during the 80% off sale this summer. Finally getting around installing her and testing her out. This character does not come with any DAZ material, only Poser 6+ material. Rather than trying to adjust this material, I started all over using the AoA Subsurface Shader Base. The promos for Fatima, presumably rendered in Poser, make her skin look very glossy. I decided to aim for a more normal skin appearance.

    Also used in this scene:
    Victoria 5 Elite Ponytail Hair
    Assassin Angel Victoria 4
    Behind the Neighborhood
    Stalker Girl Guns for Genesis

I have been working with another one of the older surreality Modern Muses V4 characters, Modern Muses Nera. She has a wonderful freckled, light complexion. I used GenX2 to transfer the body shape to G2F. Unlike Fatima who only came with Poser material, Nera comes with DAZ materials that uses the default shader. The setup is fairly fancy, with special ambient masks (probably trying to simulate SSS). The Std material rendered fine, but I chose to use the AoA SSS shader to set the skin up.

Be sure to click on the image and enlarge it to full size to see all the detail in her skin.

    Also used in this image:
    Audrina Hair
Evaleene Outfit for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    Star Of Mikaella
Photo Studio - Point and Shoot 2

Memorial day I tried out Modern Muses: Echo. She is an older V4 character and I transformed her to G2F using GenX2. She comes with DAZ skin material that uses the Human Surface Shader. It is very specular and tends to render too bright. I turned the skin specular strength from 75% down to 20%. The skin is very pale and still is very bright.

I think I will try AoA SSS shader with this skin to see if I like it better.

The other project here is the GCD Jewelry - Set1 by GrayCloudDesign available at Renderosity. This jewelry comes with only Poser materials and it renders awful in DAZ Studio. For most of it I used shaders from Jeweled Finery, including the diamond, sapphire and Siliver metal shaders. For the peral I used a shader from Diamonds 'N Pearls. I applied these shaders with the crl-load option and set it to ignore maps, so I kept all the reflection maps from the original piece.

This is still a WIP. Need to do some more work with the material on this jewlery.

    Also used:
Corvidae Dress for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    Regal Cordivae
Montespan Interior Scene by GrayCloudDesign at Renderosity.

Here is Modern Muses Echo (not to be confused with another character in the DAZ store called just Echo) with the skin redone using a basic AoA SSS shader setup. This has diffusion strength at 50% and SSS strength at 60% with white color in both and Skin B coefficients for the SSS. I like this skin tone better than with the HSS material.

This is the same skin as the previous one, but I used a shader from Queens Reign Vol.1 for the blue stones. The shader I used was labeled "Gem_12".

I'm not 100% happy with the how those blue stones look yet. May do more adjustments.

maybe less gloss effect (tho that looks fine), and a pinch of reflection. It all depends on the angles tho. What looks good with fake reflections may not work with real ones. Stones can be very tricky. (Edit, is there such a thing as Sub-surface reflection, and possibly reflection color or specular color.)

This reflection bit dose remind my of a particular diamond that didn't look good when it was put on display, so they recut the diamond.
    (Edit2)
forgot to mention, it looks good all around so far. it's just something about the big blue one on the necklace just doesn't quite match the rest.

    Also used:
    Portia Hair 2
    Trousseau 2 for Genesis 2 Female(s)
    Diamonds 'N Pearls

The main promo image for Parisa appears to be using Portia hair, but morphed to be longer. I tried that and decided I like the short look.
