You see what I did there? Eh? Eh? Eh?!

Seriously though, allow me to introduce myself: I go by the handle of "Sage" and I invite one and all to refer to me as such. Greetings and salutations. :)

I'll keep this short. Like some others, my main focus with DAZ Studio is character creation and rendering (I'm more of a traditional artist at heart, but that's another subject, suffice it to say that I think my skills on paper are somewhat lacking), and like some others have already noted, the default morph options leave a bit to be desired. That said, is it worth getting the assorted variations of the "pre-made" characters (i.e. Stephanie 4, 5, and 6) and build up that way, or should I just stick with a single generation and roll with that (i.e. Stephanie 6 + Olympia 6 + Girl 6)?

This may spark a healthy debate as there are a lot of pros and cons regarding the generations. Older generations tend to have much more content available (At this time, as well as a lot of free content, Victoria 4 being a prime example), newer tend to have more modern options and versatility (Genesis with the Male/female as one figure and clothing diversity, Genesis 2 and the hd options, and more support and artist development going forward) that being said there are scripts and other tools to bring a lot of content forward to the newer figures, a quick search will turn these up fairly quickly. Or people who know them right off the top of their heads will chime in I am sure.

I will give you my reasoning for what I have done having finally fully committed after having picked up Victoria 4 years ago and shelving Daz for quite a while. I decided to just start at the front of the figure hierarchy with the Genesis 2 figures since I did not have a huge library of older items for Vic 4, or a huge library of Genesis items. Coupled with the fact most if not all Genesis items transfer onto or can be used for Genesis 2 fairly painlessly and V4 items with some work it seemed the best route for me.

With the morph packs that are out for Genesis 2 and no doubt more to come, the morph options are expanding quite nicely. And each new base figure does add more each time. The decision is up to you, this was my reasoning with no real ties to earlier generations.

In my personal use I find the Genesis1 figure, that is the Gen5's V5 M5 F5 and such, the most versatile. it can fully morph into other figures like V4 M4 and others like V3 and M3 and into some very good creatures as well. The Genesis1 figure does have a rather large collection of shaping morphs available for it now, including face and body sets. You must buy all those add on's of course but they are there to be had.

Now do not get me wrong I do use the G2's G2F G2M V6 V6HD M6 and others as well. I also predate Genesis so I have a full set of all the Gen4's as well. In my work flow I use whichever works best for me at the time.

If I was just starting out I would be a Major supporter of the Genesis1 figure and G2's as it get's more morphs added. With G1 I can do most types of renders I can think of. Just my Two Cents.

Huh... I was hoping this would garner a few more responses; you know, getting the gamut of views and opinions and such.

Still, this wasn't without its uses, and now I have a better idea of what materials to gather. Thank you both for your input. :-)

Well, for me, Genesis was where I wanted to start. I just picked up things for Genesis 2. But with sales, and less to buy, Genesis wins for being so affordable. Fitting stuff for Genesis to Genesis 2 works great. I still haven't collected all the add-ons for making fitting things work on more things. I love how the clothes work in Daz Studio with the Genesis and Genesis 2 content. I don't have a bunch of V4 stuff, not gonna get a bunch of V4 stuff. If you are starting fresh, first go ahead and join platinum club. Then use your monthly coupons on different characters you want. Buy stuff on sale. Check out what is a $1.99 and $2.99. If you are using Daz Studio, and love that it is free, stick with Genesis and Genesis 2 stuff. Much easier to work with in my opinion. You might want to pick a genera and focus on one to start with if you trying to limit some of the mad spending. But if you care about money, get a platinum club membership as soon as possible.

I totally agree with RitaCeleste. Platinum Club is worth every penny! And even it goes on sale occasionally.

Sorry to repeat post, but I'll also agree with RitaCeleste on Genesis. It is my go-to character. I did do a little mad spending early on, but settled down and am quite contented with my Genesis stuff - Thank you AutoFit http://www.daz3d.com/daz-studio-4-auto-fit-tool.

I have purchased a couple of Gen based characters (ex. Nadia and Leon and the Night, etc..) but did so with them on sale and my Plat Club membership helped.

I love the look of the new HD stuff but don't want to put my on board graphics card through what I think it's going to take to render.

Sage: When I first started buying stuff all that was out there was Mikey 4 and Vicki 4.....then I moved up to genesis and for a long time that is where I stayed.....Now I mainly use Kory she is part of the Olympia Pro Bundle...and I really like her....she can wear V-4 clothes just fine.... for the male at this point....I use Brandon a lot he comes with the M-6 pro bundle....he can also wear M-4 clothes .....so having said all of that I would say to you buy what looks good to you......but as a suggestion go with a Pro bundle you will have some clothes and morphs hair and a different character.....just my take on things....and I totally agree with the above... go with Platinum Club if you can afford it ...it will save you tons of money in the long run.....Trish

If I were starting out, but knowing what I know now.. I would just go right to Genesis 2. I don't think I have used any of the Genesis 1 figures since 2 came out. I don't think I would by every shape that come out for it though. For sure the morphs so I could dial up things myself and any shapes that I really liked. V6 for example.

    Sage,

Decide what sort of art you want to produce and buy whatever figure best supports that type of art.

Note, however, that both the Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 base figures are free, bundled with Daz Studio 4.6. You can do quite a lot with the base figures, without having to invest in V5/M5 or V6/M6. V4 and M4 are chargeable items.

Personally, I'm currently going through a voluptuous, uber-amazonian warrioress phase so I use Victoria Six HD. The G2F body morphs set makes this kind of character very easy to do and there are some great "skimp wear" outfits available for her.

    Cheers,

    Alex.
