You can also resize an object to -100% in the X dimension. This could be handy to allow you to create an instance of a figure but with a mirrored pose, wheras normally the instance would have been identical in pose to the original.
Also, I see your meaning about resizing in the X dimension but, haven't found the controls for that yet.
In the parameters tab. See screenshot. And I've just noticed that it works with the instance, but horribly distorts the original, not sure why, but since you'd probably only want to do it that way for instances maybe the "why" doesn't matter. The figure will also turn solid black in the viewport which makes it hard to see when arranging your scene, but it will still render normally.
Actually its rendering the BACK of your textures as flipping the item inside out will point the normals to the inside of the mesh. But that still works because the Normals only matter with Some shaders and If the item is a mesh light (uber Area light for example).
Thanks for the question and answers here!!! I was making duplicate characters and trying to use one as a model while I reversed the pose on the other. Waaaaay faster this way.
Could I ask for a little more information? I attempted this last night and it didn't quite work as I had hoped but I may be thinking outside it's abilities or purpose. I am doing a Martial Arts theme and have some great poses that I bought. Unfortunatly, all the kicks are done with the left leg and the right leg is on the ground. I was hoping to reverse so that the left leg is on the ground and the right leg is kicking. It's hard to set up a fight if everyone is kicking the same direction. I have been manually posing the characters which takes awhile and it would be great to just flip it and move on.
I wasn't home last night so i couldn't get a render together to show what happens but I hit Shift+Y and make the window look just like what Marshian posted. i think i tried "mirror" first and that looked funky too so then I picked swap. Not sure if that's enough info or if it would be better to show a picture. If so, I certainly will upload one today. This would be a great tool if I knew how to use it and thanks for your willingness to help.
It may be that the pose is using some of the pose controls, things like ArmsRaise etc., and those don't (or at least don't always) get caught by Symmetry.
Default short cut is shift-B, or it is in the Parameters pane option menu. I had meant to add to my post that you can determine if pose controls are in use by looking at the Currently User group in the parameters pane with the figure selected (and then if they were, explain how to bake the pose cotnrols to actual transforms).

symmetry, recursive, swap left and right, mirror left and right

I did it with method #1 almost except I couldn't find 'mirror left and right' ?

and thanks.

Hit Shift+Y with the figure selected. That will bring up the Symmetry dialog. The Direction drop down has Left to Right, Right to Left and Swap.

Yes, this is great - I didn't know this could be done!

How is it not working? What options are you using in the Symmetry dialogue?

If so, use bake to transforms then symmetry.
