Step by step guide
I think I am missing a step in this DAZ studio environment - help would be appreciated
OK, so I'm not new to 3D, I have been using 3DS max and Cinema 4D for many years.
I work in a corporate presentation world and so my work is really quite formal, however I have for some time tried to work out how to get much better figures into my renders. After reading a lot of posts I decided to give DAZ studio a try and I have downloaded 4.6.
I had an error on the download and install for the female essentials 2 which I can't seem to get round?
Anyway, I digress.
I want to pose and dress (no more than that) several male and female figures to export to max and Cinema 4D however I can't really find any normal people or clothes, they are all so extreme - for gaming and other 3D art - are there any "business suits" type of places.
Also I don't really get the whole "such and such for victoria 5" or whatever it is. I'd love victoria 5 but where does she come from? or any of the other models? I really think I'm missing something here and it's so not clear how I should proceed
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks in anticipation of your assistance.
Joe

Victoria 5 is a shape for Genesis, as Victoria 6 is for Genesis 2 Female. Michael 5 and 6 are similarly shapes for Genesis and Genesis 2 Male. Content that works for Victoria 5/6 or Michael 5/6 will, in general, work for the base figures - the exception would be textures that were made for the specific UV set for the add-on figure, but not every item described as being for so-and-so uses the unique mapping; similarly some morphs will be made to go on top of the basic Victoria or Michael shape, but you would get something from applying them to the base figure or you could use the included morphs to enhance the individuality of the figure (or indeed sculpt your own morphs since you have the tools).
Thanks for the reply.
Ok so follow up questions.
I understand the nature do the shapes, my real question was where do they come from? Are they purchases from the shop?
Joe
The base figures come with DAZ Studio - the ... essentials sets. The Michael and Victoria 5 and 6 shapes are store products, yes.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for that.
OK, I think what's happening is that my install has not been great, so I'm not getting the functionality that I am seeing on all the tutorials, also I have hardly got any content at all and even though it's showing up in the wells, when I try and use it, it keeps saying that it can't find the files. I un-installed the whole program and re-installed it and it is the same as before.
I am guessing that the un-install needs to be deeper - any clues on this?
Also, If I download the content (genesis 2 female starter essentials - for instance) rather than download and install, which doesn't work, what do I do with the downloads when they are down, there are no install programs with them. I am assuming that I have to move them to a content folder somewhere, but I can't find any instructions on where they should go?
Cheers
Joe
Hi again Richard,
Can I keep on asking you questions or do I need to go elsewhere?
If yes - are you able to answer this question.
I did a trial export to 3D Studio max and it went fine except I am seeing that the figures maintain their own lit self- regardless of the lighting inside the 3D max environment. Is there an export setting where I can stop this happening, as otherwise this is not going to work.
Many thanks
Joe
The install comes in a few parts now - the program and, at least, three 'content' essentials (lights, genesis and genesis 2).
You'll need all of those installed to make full and proper use of them. The one wrinkle comes in where they get installed to.
In Daz Studio (once installed) you should check that it knows about the install location of the content (in the install manager click on the settings/options 'cog' icon in top right, then on the Installation tab. If memory serves there will be obe path there by default, labelled 'Recommended'). Make a note of that and then in Daz Studio get up the preferences window (press F2) and select the Content Libray tab and then click the Content Directory Mnager button and under DAZ Studio Formats check that the path from the install manger is listed. If not, click on the Daz Studio Formats label and on the Add... button.
I'm not familiar with 3DS, but it sounds as if the item is importing with ambient or luminance set. Make sure the ambient in the Surfaces pane is zeroed out for all materials, if that doesn't help you will probably have to make adjustments in 3DS though someone with experience may be able to offer a better approach.
There are quite a few "normal" looking clothes sets -- it's not all artsy 3-D stuff. Here are a few that I think look fairly reasonable/normal:
