I opened a large scene (Piazza) set it up and then loaded a character I previously made. I had trouble as a newb finding my character.
How do I load her into my scene right there?
I don't know much, so there could be another answer, but I believe everything in DAZ loads in the same spot. When you start a new file, if you look closely, there are two lines that cross and are a little thicker than the rest of the grid. They represent 0,0,0. Everything loads there.
You could also select your character in the scenes tab and just see where the xyz handle pops up.
Hold down ALT click your item and DRAG it to the Viewport, you will get a Yellow Red target. The Item will load to the targets location when you release the mouse button or the alt key. This works on most content.
EDIT: Items only load to the default ground plane never on top of items.

Holy mother of usefulness. Where'd you find this trick out?
I also Highly suggest the Align Tool as a fast tool for setting items on other items. You will learn its power by trying it a few times. Keep undo handy until you learn the options. Once learned you might like it as well.
There are also a couple of scripts for dropping things on top of other things...
This one, by Casual works great...if the 'dropped' object has a 'sane' bounding box and origin (a cylinder with the origin at the 'top' will drop bellow the item...)

Strictly speaking, the item is loaded to exactly the same X, Y and Z co-ordinates that it was saved from. I suspect most people create a character in a bare viewport at 0, 0, 0, hence it is loaded to this point as a default.

yes this is probably what is happening. then I created a scene and merged my character who appeared on another area. had some newbie trouble trying to get her to where I wanted. couldn't find the fast way of doing it.
I was looking for the Align tool? I can't find that in Daz 4.6
When I open a scene and work on it and then load a new figure such as genesis, it shows up far away from where I have been working on the scene. it takes forever to get it to where I need it.
You can Use the ALT load trick on figures. You only get all the Menus that DAZ Studio has if you Run the City Limits Layout. the Align Tool is in Windows>Panes (Tabs)>Align Tool
Okay As mentioned the ALT key feature only works for a DRAG of the content. To load a figure you will have to do it from the People folder form the Content Library View or from the Figures list of the Smart Content view.
The method is Hold down the ALT key (or corresponding Mac key) then LEFT click the figures icon, hold both the ALT key and the left mouse button down and DRAG your pointer to the Viewport. You then get the Yellow Red load target. Both must be held down until you have your target placed. Then releasing either key (Alt or the Mouse) will start the load at the targets position.
As a point of note, if your saved file has characters in a certain position that you don't want changed, you can use File -> Merge to essentially blend the two files. This copies everything in the file into the exact same locations they were originally. Bear in mind however, that it will also add in the cameras and lights, which may cause unwanted duplication. You can always deleted any unwanted extras though.

must be an easier way to bring the character into the spot you are looking at on the screen?

And this one is fun to play with...

it needs this one from mCasual...
