Making Multiple Items Non-Selectable

I'm hoping there is a way of making multiple items non-selectable. Say you load in a scene and want to make the walls and all their child elements non-selectable so that you can concentrate on furnishing the scene. Is there a way to select multiple items and make them all non-selectable (or invisible) with a single click?

Also, when you select an item and those three arrows appear (forgot what they're called) is there a way to move those arrows independent of the item you've selected?

In the Scene pane, select the parent item, right click and select Expand>Expand from Selection. Then once you can see all the parts you need, use the standard click to select the first, shift-click to select a range, ctrl/cmd-click to add to a selection to make sure you have them all selected and in the Parameters pane under Display click the Selectable button.

A trick I use it to put everything I want non-selectable into a group, then make that group non-selectable. Groups are useful for many things indeed.
