How to Begin, and How to Continue

Before we get into what I'm looking for, I would first like to state everyone should try to dumb things down for me. "UGH, YOU BEAT MEAT STICKS ONTO WORD AND NUMBER BOARD TO TYPE.".... well, perhaps not that far. But you get the point. ;P

I'm completely new to the idea of 3D Modeling. The only thing I REALLY know is their role. My sister is the one who recommended Daz 3D. If you do use slang, then define them. I would actually prefer this, as I would learn and begin to understand what everyone's talking about on their tutorials.

I'm new to 3D Modeling, there's no need to repeat that. I want to know where I should begin, what kind of tutorials should I be going for, and how would I learn to understand all the options and 'buttons' that is inside of this program. That's my first step.

My end goal is to create humanoids from a world I created with an in depth lore. I've been working on it for many, many years. I would love to eventually make it into a game, and focus on 3D Modeling myself within said group. All suggestions and ideas are appreciated on how I would go achieving a greater experience within 3D Modeling.

Thank you all in advance.

    DazStudio is not for modeling - you pose the model ( Genesis , V4 , M4 , etc )

edit to add - these will get you started -

So... you can't make your own models yourself? Everything is premade? Uh.. guess that wouldn't be useful for my purpose. (Making a unique game)

Have a recommendation of a free software that I can make my own models?

You can modify the shapes of the existing figures, using supplied morphs or using a modelling application (such as Blender) to reshape the mesh - so potentially you are spared having to build the base mesh (with which Make Human can help) and rig it, turning a static object into a posable figure. You can also make clothes and add-on body parts for the base figures, again using a modeller but with the base rigging available by transferring from the Genesis whichever figure. See RawArt'ss tore for examples of the sort of things that can be achieved, though he has of course been doing this for a long time and really knows his tools.

I'm relatively new to DAZ and 3D modeling as well, and at first blush I might agree with you. Right now I am still learning DAZ and Blender, but ultimately I have plans to use 3D art tools to help me realize my vision for a superhero comic I have had rolling around in my brain for... well... as long as I can remember.

At first, like you, I looked at what was possible and though, "Well crap, I am going to have to build and rig all my own models."

Then I had a really good look at the DAZ store here, as well as other places like Runtime DNA and Share CG. And after digging through all the resources, I discovered that there are so many and various models, and so many different morph/texture/etc. options with them, that I can pretty well create exactly what I want from the available content. So far, at least in the month I've been playing around with it all, I have been able to find a couple of character models that look close enough to what I want as to be entirely acceptable, and along with that, some very versatile clothing options, shader sets, and so forth.

Now, if you are going for completely made-up non-human creatures like owl-bears, then yes, you are going to probably have to make your own models (but I'd search anyway -- someone may have done one already). But don't dismiss the DAZ shop and other places out of hand until you've had a look at what they've got. It costs $$, no question about that -- but by my lights, it's much more worthwhile to spend say $20 DLing a pack made by a 3D artist who in all likelihood is better than I am anyway, and spend my time playing "director" and "makeup artist," than it is to get into a program like Blender and spend hours and hours trying to build posable models.

But of course, to each his own. I'm mostly just saying... don't write off the content shop until you'ave had a good, thorough search of it.

I greatly doubt that the shop will have what I'm thinking of. Though it may have things very similar to it, perhaps even acceptable for most, though in that sense I am a perfectionist. I've made several unique races, which can be similar to others, but still has a large enough difference that it would be noticeable to those who know the lore of the creature.

To boot, I will be assisting people with making a legitimate game, perhaps even several depending on how well the ideas work. Taking most things from other people or programs would be immoral in my eyes, even if it wasn't copyright. I must admit I don't /completely/ even with the explanations understand the point of this program. From my understanding it helps with the base of things, from there you can add-on and amplify the textures to what you need.

In that case, this program still could be useful to me. But I'm not looking for a program currently that I almost require to spend money to start in with what I'm wanting to do, which is 3D Modeling. I want to try it out, and see if I like doing it as much as I love watching it. I don't need a program like them of course, which costs thousands of dollars.

I simply thought this was one by all the talk and what my sister said. It was my mistake to presume so. Thanks to all still for being kind enough to explain to me what this program actually is, and for giving me the links necessary to continue my pursuit. We may cross paths again sooner or later. Till then!

It sounds like you'd probably be a lot better off with something like Blender, then. You can completely create your own 3D models in Blender, and even render them quite nicely with all kinds of rendering filters, etc... .and then export them to your game engine if you want. Blender is made for that.

DAZ is made more for scene-building. You take existing models and backdrops and props and things like that and you compose your scene and shoot it.

You can also do that with Blender, of course... so for what you are looking to do I would say something like Blender is more what you want.

    Taking...yes.

    Licensing...no.

And yes for some of the content available here, there exists a licensing path for usage of the content in new games (already existing ones, no...).

From a game developing viewpoint, yes, this is a bit limited in usefulness, but that isn't to say it's completely useless. There's a lot you can do, even without using actual game models or using the content in the games...planning/layout/storyboarding are some of what you can do very easily. You could even do in game animations/cut scenes...all without running afoul of ethical or copyright problems.
