Can't Apply Materials to Geoshells

Okay, I've got a problem here. I'm working on a project and I'm hoping to use a Geoshell to transition a character from one material to another. The problem is that, every time I try to apply the material to the shell while it's parented to the figure, it's the figure that gets the material. And when I try unparenting the shell so I can apply the material, I get an error message. Now I know that a Geoshell is essentially a copy of a given figure, so it should be compatible with all of the materials that said character can use, right? So what the heck am I doing wrong?

  • If this is Genesis 8 it's probably a Hierarchical Materials preset, so that it can change the lashes (and possibly brows) as well as the base figure. You can save a regular Materials preset for the base figure and then you should be able to apply that to the GeoShell.

To my knowledge you can only apply a material to a dedicated surface. An even though the geoshell is similar to the character it is technically not the same, and therefore you can't apply the material.

What I assume you can do is to apply your character material to anoyher character and thereafter copy it from that character to the geoshell. But that must be done surface by surface.

Edit: well, corrected by the expert :D

When I create a Geoshell, it loads in as being unselectable by default.

Go to the Scene tab that shows everything in a list, and make sure you can select the Geoshell. Once you can select it, you should be able to change the materials. You can also turn off different face groups if you aren't going to be applying a texture to them.

I'm trying that and it's not working! I've tried changing the UV sets from male to female (trying to get a male mat onto a female shell) but it doesn't work!
