Help with installing
Hi.
Some time ago I installed a previous version of DAZ (4.5), but had so many problems I was eventually forced to give up and uninstall it
I've just downloaded and installed the latest version (4.6) - using Install Manager - and thought everything was going well. However, a few problems have arisen and I wondered if anyone could help me.
First off, when I try to install the Photoshop 3D Bridge file, a message appears which I've attached below. (Together with an image of the file I'm trying to install - if that helps.)
Ignoring this problem, I attempted the Barefoot Dancer exercise just to see what would happen. However, another error message appears. (Again, see the attached image.) I can call up a figure - but it's the one made of little blocks that looks like a robot.
I thought I'd followed instructions to the letter, but clearly something is going wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
James
PS If you are able to help - assume I know nothing. (Which is largely true!)
PPS Another thought. I was under the impression I'd downloaded 4.6 - but I see that the images refer to 4.5+. Is that significant? Have I somehow downloaded an earlier version?

The error message for the Photoshop Bridge tells you what to do. The Applications page of the Settings dialogue can be found by clicking on the little Gear Icon at the top right of the DIM interface. Make sure that you enter the path to your copy of Photoshop, which must be CS4 or higher.
It looks like you have installed the content, but have not told DAZ Studio where to find it. Check where DIM installed Genesis Starter Essentials into by going to the Ready To Install tab, and clicking on the Show Details check box.
Then go to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager inside DAZ Studio, and make sure that the path from the DIM is listed as BOTH DAZ Studio Formats AND Poser Formats in that area.
Many thanks for replying. I'm attaching a screenshot of the 'Applications' page I've found. Is this where I should be? I wasn't sure what to do after that. If I click on the '-' sign to the right I am taken to DAZ3D in my Programs folder - but after that I'm lost.
I'm sure the answer is simple enough - it's just that my knowledge on all this is basic almost to the point of non-existence. :)
Re not telling DAZ Studio where to find the content, I'm attaching screenshots of the boxes I reach. Do they give you any idea of where I'm going wrong?
Sorry to be a nuisance - but thanks again for your help.
James
In your second screenshot, click on the '+' sign (Plus) at the bottom of the interface, and add the path to your copy of Photoshop. If you hover your mouse over the Plus sign at the bottom, you should get a tool tip which says 'Click here to add an application to the list'.
In your third screenshot, I would need to see the expanded listing of AZ Studio Formats and Poser Formats. Click on the little triangle to the left of DAZ Studio Formats AND the one to the left of Poser Formats, and post a screenshot. What you should have enetered there, is the path that you have in your first screenshot, under 'Content Files Install To'
Hello - and thanks again. Unfortunately, I'm still lost. I can get to the point where I have to add a path - but then I get stuck again. How do I add a path to Photoshop? If I try to add a path I can find my way to DAZ Studio (which I tried adding in the hope it would help - it didn't), but I can't see Photoshop anywhere. (I have version 11 on my PC - accessed through the Start menu.) I appreciate these are beginner questions, and thank you for your patience.
When you click the + in the Application tab you get a new dialogue. You need to set the name and version of the application, then use the ... button to select the folder that contains the actual application file.
That is Photoshop Elements 11, not Photoshop, and the plugin wont work with it anyway. The plugin only works with Photoshop CS6, CS5 or CS4 as the error message you got before said.
Many thanks for that. Does that just mean I can't install that particular file - but I can still use DAZ for most purposes?
In the meantime, here's the screenshot you asked for earlier on. Again, thank you for your help.
Yes, you can use DAZ without the photoshop bridge plugin, you just won't have access to the extra functionality that plugin would have given you.
Everything looks correct in the Content Directory Manager. The 'My Library' folder will be from your previous install, and the one called 'My DAZ 3D Library' is the default location that DIM uses.
Load DIM, go to the installed tab, and click on Genesis 2 Female Starter Essentials (check the box) and click on the green button to uninstall it. It should appear again in the Ready To Install tab. Do that with the male version as well, and then reinstall them, that should fix the problem.
Thanks for that, Richard and Sean. I appreciate you both taking the trouble to reply.
Jimmy - I've done as you said, and restarted my PC, but nothing seems to have changed. If it makes anything clearer, here is a list of my installed files. Again, many thanks for all the trouble you're taking.
I'm sorry, you have the wrong path listed in the Content Directory Manager.
You have : C:/Users/James/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library listed
But you are installing to : C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library which is the default location.
Either change the listing in the Content Directory Manager to match where DIM is installing to, or, uninstall again, and install to the path you have listed.
It would be much simpler to change the path in the Content Directory Manager for now. Change it to the second one that I have listed in Users/Public/Documents, and change it for DAZ Studio Formats AND Poser Formats.
Hello, and again thanks for your help. I've tried, but unfortunately I can't work out how to change the path. I tried uninstalling and installing everything again, but DIM doesn't ask me where I want everything installed and just installs it. I feel I've wasted enough of your time. For whatever reason, it;s clearly not going to work for me so I think I may just have to abandon it again and hope that a future version is easier to install..
It really is a simple matter to change the path, in either Content Directory Manager or DIM, but the Content Directory Manager would be easier.
Select the first path that I have bolded in my previous post by clicking on it. Then click on the Edit button as shown below. This will allow you to navigate to the correct path C:/Users/Public/Documents/My DAZ 3D Library then click on Select Folder in the Windows box to set that as your new content path.
Do that for Poser Formats as well, and everything will work correctly.
The DIM install path can be changed as well, by clicking on the little Gear icon at the top right of the interface, but just change the path in Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager for now.
Hello again - and thank you. I've done what you suggest and have finally managed to complete the installation. I've also had a go at the Barefoot Dancer exercise and everything seems to be working OK.
I'm sure I'll have more problems with other aspects of DAZ (though hopefully not for a while) - but at least I feel as if I'm up and running and can practise.
Again, thanks for your help and patience.
James
Great news!
I'm glad you stuck with it. You are always welcome to ask any questions that you have on this forum.
Best wishes.
I'm sure I'll have plenty more! :)
