LIE, Layered Image Editor is a special image editor used to add layers of images onto the texture that will be rendered, and images editor is for controlling Image gamma, so the reply to your first question is no.
The reply to the second question is Shader baking.
If you wish to save your layered image editor modifications to the diffuse color image textures, you can export the figure as wavefront object with Write Surfaces, Write Material Library, Collect Maps options active in export window/menu. It will make a Maps folder at location which you specified for export file with your modified diffuse maps saved as something like "d42.jpg".
Or you just select the Surfaces you wish to save in the Surfaces tab while the Item is selected and then Save As> Material. That will then load every thing back when applied to the item again as a texture.
