[Released] dForce Oso Lechuza for DAZ Dog 8

I am so thrilled to have this out! I've been working on the owlbear since November (off and on), and it didn't really come together until the dForce hair technology was available.

    How does the fur pattern work? If you want to do a custom pattern, do you have to paint it or can you use an existing diffuse map?

    It’s a regular map mapped like default dog. So you can use another dog fur or paint your own.

    The same applies to fur length and hair count, so if you are feeling adventurous you can tweak those maps, too.

    Cool! Thank you for that, def. gonna buy this once I get the cash.

    And I'm buying this, due to the varied fur length already present. Plus, I REALLY dig those claws.

    Great! Yeah the claws took a lot lot lot work. I should probably show how this evolved at some point.

    Remember there are toe bones so you can adjust the claws a bit up and down.

    My first try at the dforce fur;

    One suggestion for everyone, put the anisotropy down entirely. Fur renders MUCH more accurate to the texture then.

    EDIT: sooo Oso3D  , how did you do the vest on the owlbear? Because I'm getting stuff like this;

    To fit clothing, there are several approaches you can try:

    Render with and without fur, use layers in Photoshop or GIMP to composite.

    Attempt a simulation with clothing that contracts into place (I never got this to work to my satisfaction but you might be luckier)

    Create a template that’s white and then black where the clothing is. This is what I did: put clothed owlbear into Substance Painter, baked Ambient Occlusion on the Coat of the figure (making sure backfaces aren’t ignored!), export the AO map and tweak it in Photoshop.

    Then put that map into PS Generated Hair Length.

    I debated including some clothing templates like this, but I was worried it’d run afoul of ‘can’t sell work derived from other folks’ work’.

     

    Note that this last process is valid for any figure with fur.

    You could also attempt to make a template in Photoshop by hand, though it’d be tricky to line things up.

    Substance Painter isn’t the only application that can do this; you could use Mudbox, for example

    An additional thought: if you want to better integrate fur with underlying texture from other sources, my advice is to take the textures into Photoshop and increase Brightness (in Brightness/Contrast) by +75.

    Even in Oso Fur, I found the fur process seems to darken textures, and that adjustment brings them pretty well in line.

    I actually have found that just anisotropy being 0 helps a LOT. Even with darker textures, the underlying texture and the fur look very similar.

    Hi Oso3D,

    Maybe you could help me with this.  I was playing with the Lechuza, rendering it just fine WITH fur.   But after posing it here and there, the fur stopped rendering.  I can reboot, start DS, simply insert the actor onto the page, click render and it's bald. (Not just turning the viewport to iray).  Is there some type of global "turn hair off" option?  Or perhaps the kernel compiling that DAZ does is corrupt?  Either way any help would be appreciated.

    Cool product by the way.


    Just tried the same test in Beta 4.12.55  and it worked fine.  :(  That is strange to me but at least it is a temporary work around.

    No clue, that's something beyond the scope of the product. I would suggest powering down and then restarting rather than running 'reboot'; I know with other problems I've had it seems that a simple 'reboot' doesn't clear everything.

    Oso Lechuza

    Here's the image I was working on that went hairless until I switched to the BETA version of DS.  I hope to create more adventures with the two in the future.  I put a link to the product in there too as I really like the "Oso Lechuza" product.

    Hey Oso3D I created another one using your awesome owlbear (Oso Lechuza) product.  I even named it Oslo which, if you noticed, is just a play on OSO and the "L" but works perfectly for for the owlbear's name.

    Thanks Oso3D!  I gave him a dog like feeling but will most likely make him bigger and meaner in the next image.  Perhaps protecting the young boys life or something like that.

  • My only complaint for this is that it was made for dog 8 and not the brown bear by AM or any other bear, which in my opinion would have been a better fit than the dog for posing.

    Aside from AM not generally letting people use his products as a base, AMs recent brown bear model was released year later.
