Built in Lights on Sets

Some sets I've purchased have practical lighting elements, like a lit panel or a strip of lighting. When I render these elements they are black. Is there a way to turn them on or make such items glow? I know I can position a point light to light up a given area, and create a null to give that light a physical source, but wonder if there is an easier way.

My own answer: that I found these "LED" elements of the set in the Parameters....Surfaces....box and changed their Diffuse and Ambient colors to whatever "light" color I want them to have.

You can also make them into proper illuminating lights if you wish to do so. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/14536/

Making them area lights won't solve the visibility problem in itself, you still need to turn the Ambient up (only one of Ambient Colour and Diffuse Colour needs to be the desired colour, the other should be white).
