Not all DUF files are figures, you might have tried a Texture. That would Open DAZ Studio but do nothing as it needed applied to a Genesis figure or maybe a prop. It is always better to load from inside DAZ Studio by using the Smart Content Tab or the Content Library Tab.
Why I can not open a .duf file by double clipping the file?
PS: After double clipping the file, DAZ Studio was started but no 3D model was displayed.
PS: I can open the file from DAZ Studio.
This has been up on the bug list several times. It has "sometimes" worked on Windows and never on Mac OS X (except when DS crashed when you tried it ;-)) So yes, it is a bug, but it is known.
Just my 2 cents here, but it seems to me as if they are making some progress on this front.
I recall having files in my Windows 7 jumplist (in the start menu) which turned out to do nothing, but these days I can actually continue working on a render by clicking the file in the jumplist. And because it only shows me the scene files I've been working on and nothing else it's actually a very welcome feature.
