saving DS mat file - only .duf?

Does DS 4.6 only save as .duf files? If I wanted to save a ds mat that I had made, am I able to save it as .ds file so users of lower versions can also use it?

    You can save it as a depreciated file type. Look at the bottom of the save as list.
