Glowing Nostrils?

Yet another newbie question: Sometimes when lighting a character, their nostrils glow as though lit from inside their skull. This must have something to do with the opening in the geometry. I'll sometimes note a similar glow around the eyes. Any solutions to make those nostrils dark as they should be?

There are several things that could be going on.

First, what kind of lights are you using? If you use lights with shadows turned off, they will pass right through the figure and can look like they are lighting things up from inside.

Some artists also use ambient in some zones, especially the eyes. This makes the eyes glow in the dark. You need to check the ambient settings for those surface zones to see if this is what you are seeing.

I'm using various lights I put into the scene. A linear point light seems to play a big roll in the glowing nostrils. There are some point lights as well. I found the Shadow Type button that offers ray tracing or deep shadow map, but no "on" or "Off" switch.

You should have options of "none", "deep shadow map", or "ray tracing". The "none" option is shadows off and is the default on most lights. Set it to "ray traced" on all the lights and see what happens.

Note: ray tracing will slow down the render so don' t be surprised if it takes longer.

The default of many lights is to Load at NONE. That will shine into a figure and cause the Glow. Ray Trace is the FULL shadow type as supported in the 3Delight render engine.

I turned all lights to raytrace and still get the darn glowing nostril. I've turned each off and on to find the lights making the glow and changing shadow type seems to make no difference.

Could you post a pic of what you are seeing and a list of all the lights you have in the scene.

Also, what figure and skin texture are you seeing this with?

    Edit: Reading comprehension fail.

Is it actually a glow or simply a bright highlight? If it's the latter, it might be caused by a high specular value on the skin, which you can tone down in the surface settings. Just be sure to do set it across all of the skin, or you might get noticeable seams where two textures of different specularity meet.

    Glowing Nostrils

    No Shadows being cast
Shadow Bias to high/low i:e: not right
    SSS setting not right
Ambient strength of the nostril surface too high.

of my favourite a torch gone misssing. ;)
