This one from 1917 is a couple of blocks and the other side of a park away from where we live, it has a mosaic floor. The last time I walked past someone was sleeping in it :)

And why not? It kind of looks like a little house! Hmmm...Little House on the Avenue.

A government issue tram shelter, Oscar Mike Golf those were the days  We know from experience now that isolated and enclosed public spaces aren't good for rough sleepers, they are often victims of opportunity crime and nobody can hear cries for help.

As opposed to cries for help in a back alley, cardboard box, or abandoned building? I don't think it's nice or safe to be homeless no matter where you call it home. I feel bad for the homeless...and hope I won't be joining them.

An intractable problem here in central Melbourne, we try to minimise harm because that's all we are able to do.

...myself, I'm not sure right now. Seems here all they want to hire where I live are young upwardly mobile hipsters instead of those with life experience. This is part of why rents have been skyrocketing because, these trendy folks with thier nice incomes don't seem to care what they have to pay to live in the city. Oh I have a "reprieve" until the end of the year, but this is the flat time for hiring save for seasonal retail positions.

Due to all the gentrification and upscale development in the city, low income citizens have been forced to the suburbs, in someways, reversing a trend that began almost 60 years ago when those with money fled the troubles of the inner city for the peace & quiet of the burbs. Affordable old apartment houses have been bought up and either turned into "retro condos" or high priced "vintage" apartments targeted towards young "Metrosexual" and "hipster" crowd. I've seen rents in my neighbourhood jump 20% or more after one tenant moves out and before the next one moves in. The rental companies that own the buildings know they can get away with it and know that this new generation of young mobile professionals will pay for the perceived "luxury" of living in the city.

Gone is the nice old Chinese restaurant we had, replaced by a "trendy" bar and lounge. Gone is the neighbourhood's only Launderette (with a pub next door), replaced by an ugly condo/retail block with a boutique something(?) shop, hipster cafe, fitness studio, and pricey Thai restaurant. Gone is the little corner late night grocery (which had great wine prices and a nice selection) replaced by an overpriced upscale deli and restaurant. Gone is the local independent food mart, replaced by an expensive "organic" market run by a national chain. Gone is the cozy little "bohemian" wine bar that had great prices, absolutely sinful desserts, and a fun loving Yiddish owner, replaced by an trendy "diner" where a burger can cost 10$ or more and which closes after lunch.

Just a few of the casualties within a short walk from home.

I'm sure the Karaoke joint down the street will be one of the next to go. There's a multistory upscale apartment/condo building going up right next to it where the old neighbourhood bank used to be, so once the noise complaints roll in, that will be it.

Things like this make me wonder sometimes if progress isn't really regress.

Funny, today on the local commuter blog I was effectively branded by one respondent of being a "Hipster" because I ride a bike.

At my age, on my meager almost non existent income...

Guess it's nice to know I'm still "cool" eh"

Nice. Why are you apologizing to Stonemason, though?

Respect where it is due for quoting in a context that was not necessarily anticipated by the artist ;)

Well, I looked at the Black November Door Busters, and every single one of them was a PC freebie! So much for that promotion.

That's my complaint for the night.

    Good night!

Henry Frankenstein and his fiancée Elizabeth, of course. (Although they are already married before the Bride is ALIVE) :)

Not really necessary as parts of them had already been married before. :vampire:

Yeah, I noticed that too. But nice for non-PC members to grab a Freebie now, I guess.

yoww - (in the voice of cat from red dwarf)

i thought i was freezing before the wind blew a breeze at me.
i should get a coat for my buppy. he didn't complain bout the cold, but his eyes were watery. maybe i can sew one from a blanky, it doesn't have to be a fashion statement.
