Lighting

how do i go about taking a keylight or fill light and using it to illuminate from a particular prop? for instance, i'm using a canopy bed for a scene but I want the lighting to illuminate from inside the canopy from the top of the bed.

In Bryce I would do this with a spotlight or parallell light. Put the light where you want the light to come from and then adjust brightness, fall off etc till you get the effect you are looking for. DS uses Spotlights, or point lights.
If I'm understanding what you want, you could put a point light, spotlight, or area light at the desired location, adjusting the opacity of the canopy as needed.
