Using Simple Godrays?

I'm trying to create a picture but the rays are not showing, I was using white but switched to yellow as white didn't show but yellow does not either, I'm using along with the clear blue skies light that is included with the sublime illumination, I even tried lowering the spotlight and moving it closer thinking that might help but still no rays, it's an outdoor scene daytime, would a specific color work better, and do I have to go to surfaces to change the ray color? I read through the manual but can't seem to get it to work
