Making a hand grab an object.

OK, so I've got my character posed the way I like her and I gave her a spear to hold. What? It's just floating there. Hmm... I Select the spear, but there's no "fit to". Hmm again... Anyone know the way to get a hand to grab an object such as a spear and then have the spear move accordingly when I re-position the arm? Help, I'm a total n00b.

First position the Spear so a HAND pose, works for the Figure to HOLD the spear. You will need to POSE the hand yourself or use a pre-made hand pose such as Grasp that most figures have when only the hand is selected, look in Parameters for the pose with just the Hand selected. Then you Parent the Spear to THAT hand. That can be done with the Parent Dialog or by Dragging the Spear to the Proper place in The Scene Tab. The Figure will need to be expanded in the Scene tree so you can DROP the spear on the proper hand.

Also know this. EACH pose applied to the Figure can change the Hand which will need posing again to the proper grip.

Although this can be got around if you select all the finger joints on that hand and lock them (select Lock from the Parameters Tab options menu and use Lock Pose). Just remember you've done it — I sometimes forget, and end up with weird hand poses when it's time to let go of the object.

I never bother. As most of the time the POSE changes the Spear enough to need the Hand pose to be tweeked any way. I just apply the Hand pose again and then edit as needed. Even positioning the Spear again is needed from time to time.

Can I parent a hand to a handle like on an old well so that it will look like someone is turning the handle? with just moveing them at the same time Or do I just pose the handle then the hand ( hand then handle) than make a keyframe? And repeat tell I have all the turns I want.

Very doubtful if that could be done, due to the way most turnable handles I've seen are set up. Parenting really only works for holding on to a whole object, and a well handle (or a door handle, maybe a better example) is only part of an object and will rotate as you turn it. I think you'll have to set up the rotating handle, then animate the figure to match that movement. This doing-it-backwards system is actually pretty common in animation, even if you're Pixar or Dreamworks.

Don't forget to tell your character to put their back into it if the bucket's full: letting go half way may cause your character to perform a Wile E. Coyote manoeuvre. ;-)

Thank SpottedKitty. I was just trying to save myself some work. I Really do not want her to fall into the well. I know that they can take a beating like Roger Rabbit did but I love them too much to do that to them.;-)

You can try this AutoLimb. MCasual creates many script files that HELP animation and Posing in DS 1-4 be sure to check his site for stuff from time to time. He does often Update the scripts.

Jaderail Thanks I just looked at the AutoLimb. It looks so easy that I might be able to do it. I get lost with out my DIM but he explained where to unzip it too and how to use it.
The two most important things every beginner. Where to put it if not useing DIM and how to use it. On my next day off I will try it out and write him a thank you note and look over his web site.

Big Tip: As a New User I strongly suggest you learn the third party content installs, third party is basically anything from other sites. And I also suggest you do as I do. Collect all the Instructions, tutorials and Help files in one central folder on your PC. That allows me to Open them in one window and Swap back and forth to them as I work in DS.

P.S. Your more than welcome. I help because I want all to enjoy what they do and not fight the program they use.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm an old Fallout modder and I learned early on to keep all my Readmes in one place. Excellent advice.
