Ubersurface skin only for closeups?

Maybe a stupid question, but I have been playing with Subsurface on Michael 4. From a distance, say 2-3 meters, using velvet, subsurface scattering, bumpmapping etc doesn't seem to make a big difference. But for a closeup, say 50cm, one can see the details more easily.

So am is my thinking correct that using subsurface for skin makes more sense for closeups, and less for shots from a distance?

No it can be used for medium distant shots.

What effects things mainly in Uber Surface is SSS Shading Rate, small values 1.00 - 2.00 for closeups and a higher value the further away you get.

I was thinking the Shading Rate is there mainly to avoid rendering artifacts. Is this different in Ubersurface?

no but it does effect SSS and Translucency too. Think small brush for close up and big brush for further away. Well that is how I see it but I may be wrong.

Tell me about it, it seems endless but in a good way. I am having trouble keeping up with not being able to use DS4.6 much these days. Just upgrade to see what changes they have made recently.
