Crashing in Windows 10

I just got a new laptop a few weeks ago.  On it, I installed Daz Studio and sundry other 3D programs to do my content creation work.  Now, this laptop replaced an old Windows 7 laptop that I held on to until chips screamed for euthenasia for a reason - it was stable.  RARELY did I experience a crash in Daz Studio on that machine.  It was slow.   It was a little clunky.  But dangit, it was solid.

Now I live in fear of crashes.  Because, like every single one of us, you tend to get into a groove putting together a new scene with a new product and are loving the uninterrupted creative flow that is occuring, you go a long ways into a scene and forget to save the file.  I've been working around personal computers beginning with the old old old apple in 1982.  I'm a seasoned sysadmin.  All of that.  So pointing out the recklessness of not saving your work regularly would be not only unnecessary, but actually condescending (sorry, I have to say that before someone asks, "you know you should save your work, right?").  Yes, I know.  But being in a creative groove is different than doing technical work, you enter into a state of creative consciousness and the machine and program simply become part of you, like a pilot of a WWII fighter who says that the plane becomes an extension of you.  That is a great aircraft.  A program that allows you to merge with it in the same way is a great program.

Sadly, this is not the case with Daz Studio in Windows 10.  I have to interrupt the creative mindset in order to keep from losing work.  Yes, eventually, out of recognition of the fact that this program does amazing things but at the same time is inherently unstable will cause the save to happen out of automatic habit.  But in the meantime, it's annoying.

Any suggestions as to settings that might help with this once-a-day crashing experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

At the risk of sounding condescending, have you looked at the log file to see what it says at the point the program closes? There are many people who are using DAZ Studio in Windows 10 who apparently do not experience frequent shutdowns, so it is important to identify why it is happening on your machine. I do not personally find DAZ Studio to be "inherently unstable", but that is on my machines, not yours. We need to find out what is different. As a seasoned sysadmin you know that troubleshooting a problem is the first step towards solving it. There are many users here that will be happy to help if they can, but that is only going to be possible if they know what you know. Lets start with the specs of that laptop. Then some idea of what sort of scenes you might typically be working on. Any error messages, including anything in that log file? Any other applications that exhibit problematic behaviour. Etc.

  • I find that Daz is very stable in Windows 10 unless I do a lot of renders in one session. At some point after a bunch of renders Daz eventually crashed if I start another one. I just get in a habit of shutting down and restarting after several renders.

I have DAZ crash problems on W10 also, and finally sent in the "crash" report to DAZ since I  am merely a computer user... the reply was quick (less than 24 hours) and it told me the root cause plus some possible solutions.  Crash report was actually an error message -- Daz Studio has encountered an error and must close -- and included the submission instructions for the error file dump it provided.  If that is what the OP means by crash this may help, if it just shut down without warning, or a BSoD, this may not help.
