Dancing in place

Hi all:

I'm trying to animate some dances (Thriller/Time Warp) to project on the side of my house during Halloween but I'm having trouble.

What I want is to have the characters do the dance moves "in place". You can see exactly what I'm talking about here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2MBBq2BZ7A . I think the Thriller/Chiller animation starts just past the 5 minute mark. This guy has done an awesome job!

Does anyone know how to get this effect?

Any help is much appreciated!
