A few questions about models and modeling

I have a few questions about models and modeling.

1. What is the difference between say, V5 and a figure based on V5? (Or V6 and Dawn). Is it just a figure morphed from V5 with the various morphing tools, i.e. could I make the figure myself, or is the figure something else, something that is not possible to create within Daz Studio?

2. How do the creators of, for instance V5, create the figure? In Daz Studio? Some other program? If so, what programs?

I have found myself creating characters in Daz Studio alot more than creating scenes. It would be intresting to try to create a figure/character from the base. (It it does not need professional skills). I mean just for fun, not for commercial use.

    1) There are base figures and there are morphs. Victoria 4 (V4.2), Genesis and Genesis 2 female are all base figures. Each of these base figures have morphs that can alter the shape . There are morph packs for each of these base figures that you can adjust with dials or sliders to change the shape. Morphs++ for v4.2. Evolution Head and Body morphs for Genesis, and the Genesis 2 Head and Body morphs. There are also other morphs sets available, some free, for most of these characters.

While Victoria 4 was a base figure, Victoria 5 is a morph of the Genesis base figure and Victoria 6 is a morph of the Genesis 2 Female base figure.

Some characters are a set of adjustments of the appropriate morphs usually with a skin texture. Some characters are custom morphs created in a modeling tool like ZBrush or Hexagon.

Victoria 5 and 6 aren't base figures, they are shapes (and other things) for Genesis and Genesis 2 Female respectively. They would, I imagine, have been made with a sculpting tool like ZBrush as well as a modeller, probably modo, or dedicated UV tool, such as UV Layout, for the UV mapping. The base figure would be made in a modeller like modo, probably with sculpting in ZBrush or the like to refine the shape and possibly with something like UV Layout for the mapping.

You can make your own character, for the base shape or for an add-on, by sculpting or adjusting the mesh (in an application like ZBrush or Mudbox, or in a modeller, or even using DFormers in DAZ Studio) and then loading it as a morph (using Reverse Deformations to subtract the Victoria or other morphs, so that the actual morph was only your own work to be layered on top of the starting shape). Blender is free and would, at least in principle, do most of what would be needed. You'd also need an image editor for work on textures, though Blender, ZBrush and such can paint directly on the mesh.

    Thx mark128

Are the V5 something that could be made from Genesis with, say the Genesis morping bundle, or is it not possible? If it is not possible, is V5 made, in for instance, Hexagon? Is the difference between a morphed figure and a base charcter that clothes for the morphed figure will fit the morphed character if it fits the base character or are there other distinctions between a new morphed figure and a new base character?

Your mentioning of Hexagon leads to another question. Whats the difference between Carrara and Hexagon?

    Thx Richard.

I posted my new questions before I saw your answer.
That sounds way over my head at the moment. :)

V5 is a custom morph of the Genesis shape, probably made in ZBrush or some similar tool. Hexagon is a modeling tool, but tools like ZBrush are more powerful.

Also note Richard mentioned UVs. The skin is a set of 2D bitmaps, usually jpgs. The UV map controls how these 2D textures are applied to the surface of the 3D figure. The Victoria 4 base figure only supports V4 UVs as far as I know. The Genesis and Genesis 2 figures can support multiple UVs. By default Genesis supported V4 UVs. V5 has its own UV set for Genesis that you get when you buy V5. The Genesis 2 Female supported its own UVs and V5 UVs. You can get V4 UV support for Genesis 2 Female as an addon product. V6 has her own UV set for the Genesis 2 Female that you get when you buy V6.

Presumably these UVs are more optimized for the shape of morphed bodies, ie there will be less distortion when applied to the body. You usually don't see this distortion, but you can if the skin texture includes fancy eye makeup or tattoos on the skin.

You also mentioned Dawn. Dawn is a different base figure created by another company. Dawn has her own morphs and UVs.
