Iray Ghost Shaders looks interesting, anybody tried it already?

Thank you.

  • I bought it. I dabbled with it a bit yesterday. Had a hard time with lighting. Since the figure goes transparent, backlight shines right through, while front light washes it out. Sharp lines can appear, too, based on light projection. I think it will be cool once I work out the lighting.

The product page has tips on lighting. It says "These shaders work best in HDRI environments with little to no lighting (in other words, flat color environments). I have included five flat-light HDRI render environments to help get you started. Most of these promotional images were made simply using the included HDRI environments and either the default camera's built-in headlamp or a single photometric distant light added to the scene. Expand your creativity and experiment with other environments and light sets to achieve a variety of different looks."

Yes, I tried out the included items, but wasn't pleased with the effect. The other HDRIs and lights I was using were for low-light scenes.

I was curious but honestyly I haven’t had much luck with ghost products or low light renders... so I was waiting to see what other people do with it.

  • I'm having a real problem with the clothes on people. Not all figures have nip and gen removal options, and I can't seem to find a way to get the clothes to mask the nudity. The promo images show clothed ghostly figures, but I don't know how that was achieved.

Can you get away with simply making those body parts invisible?

pwGhost is a really good shader but it doesn't work in Iray. This is the first ghost style shader I've see for Iray. I expect that Iray's insistence that light must always behave realistically makes these sort of effects more difficult than in 3Delight.

Yup, that's why I said nice try. Actually I'm impressed!

Thank you everyone for your feedback.

Will wait to get this but it's on my wishlist. (I do have pwGhost for 3delightwink.)

I created a similar shader for myself, and what I learned is that it helps a lot if you create a ghostshell for the object you want to ghost and place this pretty much directly below the surface. The ghostshell also needs the ghost shader. I think this also should improve issues with this shader.

As for lights, put the ghost in the shadows and try to avoid it being hit by any light, and have some dark surface behind it so they stand out better.

This is a render with my OLD shader, but I think it illustrates the issue. This uses a geoshell with negative setting.

Thank you for the advices, that's very interesting @BeeMKay.

    Your image looks very good.

Thank you for the input. I've never worked with geoshells. Can you point me to where to learn about making a ghostshell?

  • Thank you! I will work through this and add some new tricks to my skillset. :)

I actually like this shader. Below is a sample render with medium settings. A bit slow on my GTX 1080 - Rendering Time: 44 minutes 52 seconds

@Worlds_Edge was asking about using the Iray Ghost Shaders to create a crystal statuette similar to Lalique Crystal. Here is my first attempt.

    Frosted Crystal Statuette

As long as you don't go close to the face, you can get away with it. There are only the eyesockets for eyes. Or close the eyes. Be prepared to increase the Refraction Index to around 2.0 to 3,0 depending on the size of the object, and you may want to adjust the Backscattering Roughness if there are multiple objects together like the image above, to create a more uniform look.

Lighting is just as important here, too. The color of the statuette comes solely from the color in the HDRI. And too bright can wash out the crystal look.

That’s stunning @ladair. Really beautiful. Now I want one for my mantle lol

Hi, just resurrecting this thread to ask a question.

I want to do a render of a character with wings made of light, my thought is that the light outlines the edges of the feathers/wings so they look like how etching images on glass or metal do, if that makes sense?

Would this product achieve that or do I need to come up with another way?

    Kinda like this: https://images.stockcake.com/public/2/3/8/238174b0-b9f4-411e-b3e0-c3ade5b26e21_large/phoenix-rising-majestically-stockcake.jpg
