Problem installing third party content and telling DAZ where to look for .jpg etc. files
Hello again. More questions I'm afraid! But people have been so helpful...
I have been having some difficulty installing third party content into DAZ, in a way that doesn't cause the program to have trouble finding important elements of it.
I basically have 2 questions:
1) What is the best way to go about installing third party content into DAZ on a Mac?
Having looked at other tutorials, I understand that I need to put the elements in the "runtime" folder in my DAZ content library (since the third party content is basically a bunch of Poser files).
Unfortunately, I do not know how to "merge" the third party runtime folder with my runtime folder in my DAZ library. Part of the problem is that I have a Mac (OS X 10.6) and it does not offer "merge" as an option when I, for example, copy the third party runtime folder and then right-click on the runtime folder in my content library.
2) Is there any way I can tell DAZ to look in particular files to find the .obj and .jpg files it needs to define and texture a new piece of content?
When I come to use the third party content, DAZ tells me that it is unable to locate the .obj and .jpg files that define the geometry and texture. I can tell DAZ where to look, but this is very laborious to do each time. Is there a quicker way?

There is a way to merge files on a Mac, but not being a Mac user, I don't know how, sorry.
The other alternative, is to empty the contents (files NOT folders) of the Runtime folder you are trying to install into the correct folders in your DAZ 3D library folder.
It would be much simpler for you to find out how to merge folders on a Mac, either in a Mac forum, or waiting here for a Mac user to give you instructions.
If the content is nicely packaged (that is, with the Runtime folder at the root of the zip, not inside another folder) then you may be able to merge as you unzip - otherwise I'm afraid you will need to wait until one of out tame Mac users sees the thread.
With any luck, if you are able to merge the Runtime with the existing Runtime you will find that the content loads correctly - if not there are three options: open the files in a text editor and correct the references; move the geometry and texture files to the location set in the library files; or simply correct the locations as you load and then save as native presets or scene subsets.
if you have zip from sgaeCG, or any of the other stores I heartly recommend "my own" RendoInstall, which does what you want it to do. I use it all the time. Only quirk is some content that does have DS data puts it in a weird place so it cannot find it, so you might need to move that part yourself, but thats often just two folders.
You find it in the link below to 4eyes, under applications, and best of all its free. I have some other mac tools there as well.
Progress update:
- Thank you everyone for your responses. I am working through your advice.
- So far, I have had a bit of success with just carefully reviewing the file structure of the third party content and making sure that I mirror it exactly in my Runtime library. One problem was that I was not doing that.
- I will look into the other pieces of advice. In particular, I will see if I can get a better file merger: I tried the free "File Merger" software for Mac OS X and it doesn't seem to be working.
Thanks for that, it may help some users in the future. The last post to this thread, prior to your own, was over two years ago.
