HDRI on closed indoors scenes?

Hi, I feel this is a pretty dumb question but well, I'm pretty new and I just wanted to be sure... is it possible to use HDRI lighting if you are rendering a scene within a closed off environment, like a dungeon or spaceship corridor, basically a scene without windows? The only way I've been able to let the light from the environment in is by turning the visibility from the ceiling or one of the walls off but I'm not sure if I will always be able to do that and if that way a I'm losing most of the effect from the HDRI. I've been looking around for tutorials but every single one I've read or watched use outdoor scenes or rooms with windows (main reason I think it's probably a dumb question).
Thanks for any tip or advice on that or closed space lighting in general!

Rather than go over the subject again here is a search which has a lot of posts covering this. If you can't find what you are looking for then come back with the questions on the parts you aren't understanding as it will be much quicker that way.
