What's The Difference Between ?????

I was going through my wishlist and noticed the light gels for Daz and wondered what is the difference between light gels and just using a prop to create similar shadows? From what I see, gels look like shadows from leaves and barred windows and the like. I do know that the prop can't replace the light, but I tend to set my own up and figured a prop could give me the same effect.

The biggest advantage (there are others) is that the light gel makes shadows without needing a mesh object or textures to go on the object. Less calculation needed for the render, so it'll be faster, and less computer resources needed for the no-longer-there object.
And (at least in Carrara) gels can carry color too.
The dollar signs are a light gel on a spot light set to only light the Daz Cyclorama used for a background.
Gels carry colour in Bryce as well, can be real fun to use and play around with
They can also use colour in DS
