Rendering times and computer specs

Hi all,

New user here. I am new to Daz and 3D modeling in general. I downloaded it on my laptop which i will share its specs for comparison: I7-7700 quad core 2.8ghz 8gb ram geforce gtx1050. I was curious if it would even run and it does but it can get slow the more i have open and the rendering time is about an hour for some fairly simple scenes. Ive been wanting a new pc that would work for both gaming, Daz, and a workstation so I bought all my parts and am wondering how much a difference I can expect in rendering times with my new specs. They are as follows: I7-8086k six core 4.0ghz (can overclock to at least 5.0), 16gb 3200 ddr4 ram, gtx 1080 @ 1700mhz. Is this enough to make my renders fly significantly faster?

From the 1050 to the 1080 is a big difference. You should see at least a 4x speed increase, but probably more depending on the scene.

The amount of VRAM on your card also helps somewhat especially for bigger scenes.

Mike, a little friendly advice. Since you did mention it, a word of caution re. overclocking. Do not overclock anything in a PC that is being used for rendering graphics. You can get away with that when using a PC for gaming, but gaming is trivial compared to the resources in play when rendering, particularly large or complex scenes. Your system is already going to be stressed. Do not add to that by overclocking. Perhaps you were referring to Turboboost or similar, which is fine, but since you are a new user I felt compelled to make the point regarding any manual overclocking.

    Have fun.

Thanks for the advise. I got the 8086k because its base speed is faster than the 8700k in case I didnt want to overclock. So it looks like that was the right decision since I likely wont be overclocking now.

  • Hmmm ... I do not know if you are using 3Delight for rendering, but it will get a boost as well because it works with CPU cores ... so six cores will be faster than 4 cores. (one of the unsung advantages of Daz studio is an unlocked version of 3Delight).
