Exporting .mc6 materials for use in 3ds max

So sorry if this is a dumb question. I recently purchased TheAntFarm's Grav Boots and have been working to get them into 3ds max. The default color is yellow and when I export those to fbx, I get the yellow boots when imporing into 3ds, but there are 4 other colors that come with the boots including white. If I apply any of those material in Daz, the colors show up correctly, but when I export to fbx or obj and import into 3ds I always get the white texture. The fbm exprot folder also only saves the white texture jpeg. Is there an easy way to get these other color textures exported out of Daz correctly?

Thanks so much inadvance for any help or suggestions.

  • You don't want export of a mesh object, you want export of materials settings. I've never used 3DS MAX, what does its materials setup look like? And just as important, how do the materials parameters compare with the DAZ|Studio ones? If the two are different enough, the only option might be to reverse engineer and rebuild the materials in 3DS. Also, note that when you export as an .obj the materials setup is very limited with only a small number of parameters — if the D|S materials are more complex than that, you'll have to rebuild the materials in 3DS anyway. I don't know if an .fbx export has the same limitation.

Don't imbed the textures as part of the FBX but as a seperate folder. It's one of the options that you check/uncheck.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I am very new to 3d modelling, so I cannot say with any authority how 3ds Max's materials are set up. I am able to export textures from Daz for alost everything I have worked with, and can even get the Grav Boots' textures out of Daz, but I just can't get the blue, grey, or green ones exported. If I load the yellow ones in Daz (they are the default), their diffuse texture exports fine. Also if I load the white ones in Daz, their texture exports fine, but if I load any of the other three colors, it just exports the white diffuse texture. The more I am reading about it, I' starting to think it may just be a shader setting in Daz that is creating the blue, grey, and green colors. Of course being a complete novice, I have no idea if my thinking is correct or not.

The, "defaulting to white texture" happens regardless if I export from Daz as obj or fbx.

Thank you as well for taking the time to help. I appreciate all the help I can get.

Here are pics of my Daz export settings for both obj and fbx, as well as what the textures folder looks like after exporting.

I think I've found (perhaps one of) your problems — that isn't the .obj export setting, it's the .3ds export setting. Try using the "Maya" setting instead, and use the .obj import setting in 3DS MAX; that should give the exported mesh the correct scale and orientation.

Another potential glitch is the way materials are saved when you export. The .obj format also saves a .mtl file which defines all the object's diffuse colours and any texture files applied to it. Are you loading the converted file into 3DS from the same location you exported it from DAZ|Studio, or are you moving it? If you're moving it, then the .obj file may be losing track of where the matching .mtl file is. This might be what's causing the "export as white" situation.

Thanks again so much for the help. I tried using the May export settings. Also tried importing into Maya to see if any difference. (pics attached)

Yes, exporting to and importing from the same location and the mtl files are showing up there.
