Why do characters sometimes look like they're glued on the scene?

Sometimes, one of my characters looks all wrong, as if he was glued on the scene (like a photomontage) rather than being part of it. From what I read, it seems to be related to lighting, but if it's the case, I don't know how or why.

So, what causes this, and how to fix it?

Often it is the lack of shadows that link the character to the ground or other scenery.  If you are in 3delight, 'ambient occlusion' is a trick that adds shadow in corners (e.g., where characters' feet meet the ground) without doing full-on shadow creation.  Age of Armor's "Advanced Ambient Light" product can be excellent for producing this effect.

Did you turn off the Auto Headlamp?

    Render settings> Editor Tab> General>Auto Headlamp
