Displacement Project - Feet
Ok so I decided I'm going to start some displacement projects to try and explore unfamiliar ground on Daz3D as a whole.
I'm starting with one of my most hated parts of the standard Daz3D models, the feet. You can read more about why I despise the base model in my discussion post:
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/275696/feet-hd-detail-or-lack-thereof#latest
So as for part 1 of my exploration I wanted to test out displacement maps of genesis 3 and genesis 8 female, to be more specific "foot scrunching" effects. I was able to create this effect to some degree:
(Make sure to click the image to get an animated variant)
Using Genesis 3 and the foot shape morph I created I got it looking much better than I thought, however the effect isn't quite as strong as I had hoped... this is due to the fact that if you bump the displacement up too high you start to get unwanted noise (or at least in this experiment it did).
Also it's fair to note that this has been done before by various artists, Mostly for the V4 figure. I've yet to see any products on the market for gen 3 and 8 around this issue.
I'm going to do displacement projects for the hands, elbows, knees, etc as well when I have time.

Maybe one day when models are posed DAZ Studio will use an algorithm to procedurally place wrinkles in the correct places when a joint is bent or muscles are flexed or relaxed.
One can only hope, though I would say in a way they already have that algorithm. My knowledge is pretty limited but from what I know, there's already morphs in daz that effect other morphs.
If they were to just apply hd morphs and link them to the joints I could definitely see it as a possibility, though I doubt it would be as simple as I'm making it sound.
Yes, they do have that but those are manually made.
Indeed, that automatic algorithm you mentioned could definitely be something to see in the future. I back this idea of yours.
Looking really good. It's hard to get them to realistic because the foot has the smallest area of the legs. So you would need to go out of the box with the displacement resolution to make it crisp clear.
Any chance of getting a download for that displacement map? (As well as a little info on how to use it?)
I did a search and came across your Deviant Art page, then saw this and figured you were the same author. I didn't see a way to download it though.
No not yet, they aren't finished and honestly I'm trying to pair it with an original model and possibly sell it.
I do have an update on some future projects I'm working on however. Click the gif below to see it enlarged.
That looks pretty darned amazing! I hate rendering feet because they look so flat...
Yes I've searched around and honestly, the daz community (at least the one's wielding the power of content) don't seem all that interested in making feet look less terrible. So I'm rising to the task! (or something like that)
It will take some time, and a lot of tinkering but I think I can make this become something we can work with.
The flat stubby feet are terrible. I hope you can make a product and bring some realism to one of the most neglected part of the many models. The gif is impressive indeed.
Are the feet custom sculpted or are you using the "Beauty Fingers and Toes"-morph? Are you planning on making a morph for more realistic shape of the feet too or just maps?
The foot morph is about 80 percent mine, and 20 percent of it I would credit towards killer legs morph and it's expansion for the ankles and such. I don't use beauty toe it doesn't quite look the way I want it too though it's great for the "top" of the foot, the sole of genesis 3 and 8 looks terrible with creases and whatnot. I was able to minimize those creases through zbrush and a lot of patience. I have a previous post of my foot morph for this original character, it looks like this:
Love those! Any chance you will share or sell those morphs and even bring them for Genesis8?
