Thanks AngryChair (lol that name) and tjohn.

tjohn don't forget you won't get those results from the presets. But I can run through what I did if that helps any. I must say though it is a nice little model for how old it is.

Speaking on nice (the render is) but did you get your other little model (PC) straight?

I know I'd appreciate a breakdown on how you did it but only when you get the time, appreciate you're a busy person. Did you manage to get your PC issue sorted in the end?

Yeah I used this username for years now and is the name of my YouTube channel for my Lego stopmotion videos. I'm a big Alice in Chains fan so that's where it came from! 'bout time I thought of a different name I guess!

    Thanks Jad

Jad and AngryChair Yes it does look like I fixed the BSOD but doing a chkdsk and found some bad sectors and a corrupted Windows system file. So far not one BSOD. Finger crossed.

As for a break down well that is fairly easy as someone else has made a PGE tutorial I will link to and for the rest I can show what mat zones I split. Surface settings are fairly straight forward.

Excellent, yeah a link would be much appreciated, thanks! Glad the PC fix was pretty straightforward in the end.

    Happy rendering!

    as promised

As I said earlier I made a lot more material Zones that the Spider had, so first thing is to split of the mat zones by following this tutorial.

Adding new material zones with the PGE (Polygon Editor Tool)
When using the PGE you will find all the commands for this tool via Right clicking, if nothing appears then select one Polygon and try again.

Additional Commands that the above tut doesn’t cover.

Holding Ctrl down and selecting a polygon will add to the selection,

    Holding Alt does this opposite.

Shift + Ctrl + + will grow the selection

For this model all of the new mat zones were easy to make because of how it was modelled allowing me to just select the parts I want and no more. Example clicking on one polygon on each foot, (blade) and then using Shift + Ctrl + + will grow the selection until all the blade polygons are selected. But we aren’t always that fortunate as sometimes the selection will grow to cover more than we want. For that we need to manually select each polygon, or groups of using the different polygon Selection Tools.

    Uber Surface

These are the only channels adjusted all the rest at default. No, specular, bump or displacement maps.

    Metal

Diffuse Roughness 1.20 Seems counter intuitive to increase roughness to make the surface shinier.

    Index Of Refraction 2.50

    Specular

    Specular 1
    White
    Strength 100%
    Glossiness 85%

Anisotropic either U or V depending on the texture map and how is was UVMapped. I do this by selecting the mat zone and switching the Viewport window to UV View mode. But this model wasn’t easy to figure out so a lot of it was done by numerous test renders.

    Specular 2
    38, 38,38 Grey
    Strength 70%
    Specular 2 Sharpness 5%
    Anisotropic same as above

    Reflection
    White
    Strength 100%
    Reflection Blur 0.50

    Fresnel
I must admit like many here this baffles me but after reading a lot about this many very expensive rendering and modeling software have the same problem not following any mathematical formula that relates to the real world so I do it by eye.
    Strength 10%
    Fall Off 1.00
    Sharpness 2.00

    Plastic

    Diffuse Roughness 1.00.
    Index Of Refraction 1.46

    Specular

    Specular 1
    White
    Strength 90%
    Glossiness 65%
    Anisotropic as above

    Specular 2
White with the Diffuse Map plugged in to the colour channel
    Anisotropic same as above

    Reflection
    White
    Strength 5%
    Reflection Blur 1.00

    Fresnel
    Strength 10%
    Fall Off 1.00

    Translucency
White and plugged in the Diffuse Map
    Strength 50%
Though I didn’t see much difference with this OFF

wow that's extensive work, thank you for the breakdown. A lot of that is way over my head but going to brew a big coffee and go through this slowly

    Thanks again.

Getting my HDD replaced on Monday and I am wondering what I need to copy making reinstallation of DS and DIM easier as all my content is installed on a USB HDD and have over 30 Content folders. Any help with this would be appreciated. Yes there is info on these forums regarding this but it is all over the place and it is confusing me.

You can tell Daz Studio 4 to use the content library. Go to the edit menu, then preferences. Click the "Content Library" tab at the top.

Under "content sets", click "Daz Studio Formats". Then click "add" under "Directory" on the left. You can also add Poser libraries by clicking "Poser Format" on the right pane, then click "add" on the left again.

I mapped my Daz Studio 4 library this way after I moved it from C:\my documents to d:\studio 4.

I can't help you with Daz Install Manager, sorry.

Thanks but that is not what I am after I would like to know what files I need to backup in order to set DIM up on the new HDD without the need to A: set up all of my content folders in DIM and B; to save me reinstalling everything again.

Thanks for trying though much appreciated.

Hi, sorry for the late reply.

Declaimer: I haven't had a chance to test my theory below. I have Windows XP 32 bit.

You may be able to copy the settings from c:\document and settings\(user name)\application data\daz 3d\install manager\User Accounts to the new computer.

Daz Install manager also has files in My Computer->Documents\Daz 3D\Install Manager.

    Hope this helps.

In DIM you need your File from Users>AppData>Roaming>DAZ 3D>InstallManager>Accounts>Account.ini
In DAZ Studio you needed Users>AppData>Roaming>DAZ 3D>Studio4> I would nab it all and only pop back the parts that do not auto generate on install.

You will also Prob want your CMS Database and the USER Files from Resources as well.

Nope. Pete manages to keep it current, and I think it gets more attention that way. Seems people ignore sticky threads.

I want a pound for every time I have seen people asking where they can find the monthly PC coupon code, and I just say in the sticky thread which is right above your post.

Your more than Welcome... now teach me more lighting things... like all the AoA lights for example... %-P

AOA lights you say...you do realise I have just got them and haven't had a chance to use them yet. :P Added to this I also need to learn about them too. I have been reading up on them and I think I have a handle on them.

This may surprise you but I struggle with lights like many here, the difference could be I do a lot of testing, adjusting and testing. Some scenes I have to remove all the lights and start again as I get myself in a muddle. I don't save light presets as I light each scene from scratch and have done so for a few years now.

But what I do have is a more than basic understanding of the lights themselves, not the coding side but the front end.

If you have specific q's then ask away and I will see what I can do.

ok what do you want to know as I have used them now and have a handle on them.

Just a quickie I threw together last night. Testing how quick I can cobble a scene together. Tried to use AOA SSS shader but I was getting some issues so I used Uber Surfaces instead. Lit by two AOA Distant Lights, one to add some bounce light and 1 AOA Ambient Light. Rendered with Gamma Correction on set to 2.20.

Increased Saturation in Photoshop by +5 and used a High Pass filter on top. And that is it.

I thought it came out well.

That's real nice especially for a quick pic! Perfect camera placement also to make the eye travel up the stairs. Love the lighting and the mixture of his modern clothing set against a classical building. Makes for a good contrast.

    Great stuff as usual sir

My entry for this year's Bird Rendering contest http://itiseyemeeszark.deviantart.com/journal/Render-some-hot-birds-and-get-prizes-435057474#comments

Drawn on the 22th April but from what I have seen I don't think I have any chance of winning. But I like my image and that is what counts.

Tried to use Garibaldi hair to simulate the finer smaller feathers on the body and head. Not an easy job but I think that is the best I can get it.

Lit by AOA Ambient and Distant Lights.

Rendered in DS4.6 and postworked in Photoshop CS2. Increased Saturation a touch and used a High pass Filter for the extra sharpness.

Darn Szark you just ROCK the software. Wish I could wrap my muddled brain around it all as well as you do.

Hmm... wonder if a Szark transfusion would help me any... Heck he is small, I could probably fit him in a drip line...
