Why is the skin so shiny?

in New Users
I used the skin preset with the red ball icon because everything else replaces the textures. it's an imported obj model.

I'm not sure which preset that is - please give its name and location - but you can avoid the map repalcement with others by holding down the ctrl key (cmd for a Mac) while double clickng the icon, then in the dialogue choose "Ignore" for the Maps option.
The surface texture is probably a 3Delight texture, and that has the tendency to be too glossy when you render it in Iray using the built-in on-the-fly-autoconversion.
There are two options. The first would be to convert the texture from 3delight to Iray. The second would be to o to the surface tab, locate the glossy slider and lower that value until the figure looks okay.
I used the dzskin shader. applying materials doesn't seem to do anything. neither does ignore maps.
Try the Iray Uber Base shader. That works better. You can then play with Glossy Layered Weight - but that value should be much lower than 1.00. If there is a Specular Map (looks like a dark map with high contrast), add it to Glossy Layered Weight. You will need a higher setting for the eye surfaces, lips, mouth and nails.
V3Digitimes has several Iray Converters for various generations - this can really simplify things: https://www.daz3d.com/iray-converter-for-generation-4
