A lot of things. But at this time, mostly the people living in my head. Aka, my mind sharers. Or - for normal people - my characters.
Sometimes simly wanting to know how something is going to work can do the trick, too, though.
Everything around me and online. I am lucky enough to be inspired by all sorts of things, other peoples art, movies, people walking down the street, etc etc.
Other artists and their works, old fashion magazines, comics, really bad scifi/monster/ninja movies, and perhaps most of all, the little details of ordinary everyday life.
my last big pic http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/2765/P240/#399536 was inspired by a resin modelled figure my wife has in her collection.
1. Lighting. When a simple object has the right lighting it gets a WOW factor
2. Szark, Evil Producer's, and Totte's work due to #1
3. Me. I see I am learning thanks to Szark, Totte, Tramp Graphics, Jaderail, Barbult, Scott-L, fixmypcmike, Jimmy C_2009, and more. I'm not embarrassed to say when I do something right I'm inspired to do something else or add on to what I'm doing. I think we all have that, and need it. If you don't like what you're doing then you won't keep going.
Awe shucks Novica that is nice to hear.
Thanks everyone.
I was feeling a little uninspired but it might have more to do with RL and being mentally tired from work than lacking inspiration.
I too find other people's work inspiring. The different things that are possible. The different options people take with poses, textures, cameras, lighting, etc. I love seeing something and thinking "I never would have thought of that". It helps get me out of the rigid little tunnel that I seem to live in. :-)
Something that might be fun and inspiring- take one of your sets that you own an explore all the nooks and crannies. I've been pleased with some of the "fun finds" that I wouldn't have thought would be in a set. The MGM Mill, for example, has a water feature down the wall from the corner with the barrels and pretty potted tree, and I didn't notice it in the promos. So just pokin' around in the obscure corners might provide some new ideas.
You can also join my Szark Fan Club, lol. Then he'll have to keep producing those wonderful light tips when he posts the renders so we can keep learning. (You really are kind to do that Pete! :) I enjoy seeing how it all comes together.)
Thanks Novica. I bought The Priory ( thanks to your thread ) and was playing with that the other night.
When talking about work performed with software like DS4 then it has to be the community for me. And to me that includes the Daz3D store as well...
I dunno, maybe I got into this thing for some clichéd "wrong" reasons, but the thing is; if you work on that to try and perfect your sceneries you'll soon open up a world beyond your wildest imagination (I said it was a cliché, but that's how I feel about this).
For me it's the community. Like today; I came across and immediately bought Andromedas legend, useful for the Genesis model. Sorry for showing off a bit (I also mentioned this one in another post of mine) but I'm honestly excited about this scenery. Almost ready to share a little 'back'. *
But what I'm gaining at: that inspires me. We all see a (big) dragon which usually only leads up to more brutal and offtopic stuff, I see an opportunity to create a cool, even slightly sexy, pose.
I see an Elven queen (wearing the Elven dress) who considers to skip feeding her pet (sub)dragon for a day and instead anxiously wonders if her evil plans work out... All for good motivations of course; to protect the species; the human girl should not be allowed to carry the news of the Elven society.
Then we entered, and passed, a classic "Damsel in distress" kind of scenario.
Next I see the opponent. Maybe a male.. otoh.. I don't have that many male models. Ok; a Dragon warrior princess who wears something almost alike the Elven queen (come to think of it, I hope I'm not breaking rules here: this one is awesome too!) and will challenge her narcissist ideas and believes; humans and elves can live besides each other!
Seems I'm not; I'm only addressing what I got here ;)
But seriously; I'm quite excited about that stuff. And that also inspires me.
For context: I only picked up on this stuff as a hobby. I like playing around, and I guess I also was intrigued with the option to, well, build some more adult themed sceneries. And that's where the fun begins (no pun intended, nothing between the lines either). Anyone who has a full model can put one on without clothes.
That becomes boring really fast.
And before you know it you're dressing your model in a way which you think not only looks cute but is also a little bit offtopic. That takes time! And once you finished a pose or scene like that then chances are high you're baited, hooked and soon sinked ;)
Because then you might start to fantasize "above and beyond". For example my little fantasy which I shared up here and which I'm working out right now. And the only trigger was the Andromeda screenshot.
So for me it's the community stuff.
edit:
* working on a (non-adult) render I'm gonna share, hoping people may like it.
Glad you got the Priory
You've used it ahead of me, lol. Be sure and let us see what you're doing, that set is so huge.
I get totally excited about things I see in the DAZ store as well.
I think my "lack of inspiration" has/had more to do with RL getting in the way.
Thank you for sharing.
That set has so many possibilities and I never would have purchased it without your thread.
Well that, and I was goofing off a little at work reading the forums. :red:
Oh! Another one! Challenging myself!
If someone asks me if I can do x and the answer is no, I will not let it rest until the answer becomes yes. Even if it takes forever. Right now, I'm playing with d-forms and loving it :D
Don't forget simply trying things out, either. I rarely end up with the image I had in my head before starting a project. Not because I couldn't do it, but because the other camera angle was so much better or that other set of clothes was simply so much more interesting..
Excellent point mori_mann. I do tend to get stuck on an image in my head which then limits what I am doing. That and not trusting my own judgement. :)
me myself and I !

me myself and I !yeah that figures. :)
In no particular order...
- Other people's renders and digital artwork
- Non-digital art (some artists who inspire me: N. C. Wyeth, Howard Pyle, John William Waterhouse, Brian Froud, Alan Lee, John Howe, and many others)
- My characters, stories, etc.
- All the amazing products I've gotten (look at your Product Library, pick something, and brainstorm interesting ways to use it)
- Books I'm reading or have read
- Music, movies, etc...
- Desire to learn new techniques, or to practice known techniques. I'll come up with a scene that will allow me to experiment. Probably most of my renders start out this way.
Great ideas. Thank you.
Other people's renders
items - sometimes I'll look at something and think of a story to go with it that I can render.
Music
Films
Nature
My head - I'm always making something up in my head.
As requested Novica here is the render I was working on using The Priory.
Still needs some work.
