A Year On Mars

A spacecraft gets launched from Earth on a big rocket (26 November 2011), then is thrust so as to make it fall around the sun in just the right path to reach the planet Mars. A few more gentle nudges, and the spacecraft falls into the Martian atmosphere. Through an ingenious system of parachutes, winches and rockets, it is lowered gently onto the surface (6 August 2012, 05:17 GMT). For a year, it explores the planetary surface, reporting its findings in images and other scientific data to all humanity.

Happy Anniversary, Curiosity! Many happy returns!
