Why Does Parenting an Object Cause It to Be Repositioned?

I put the ax in G3M's hand.  Positioned it just perfectly.  Then I parent it.  And it jumps to a new position.  Not just a little.  It completely rotated around so the handle is facing towards me.  It was doing this with a hair prop earlier today.  Got it positioned perfectly, parented it, and it jumped down to G3F's knees.  What is going on?  Am I doing something wrong?

Did you to parent it to the hand bone, and made sure that "parent in place" is selected? Also, make sure you selected the hand bone of the figure, and not of some piece of clothing in the parenting list.

Make sure that parent in place is ticked :)
