How to do Lighting?

I'm a newbie. I'm trying to render some trees. I go to the render room. Although the preview looks good, the rendering comes out utterly dark.
Why would the preview look good and the rendering so dark?

Lighting. Obviously I need some lighting. I'm looking in the manual to see how to do lighting.

The table of contents sends me to page 119, and there I find that the lighting section hasn't been written yet!

Is there a better copy of this manual somewhere? Is there a discussion of lighting somewhere? I can't even locate the basic tools, how to place a light. Somebody help me! Even a one-page discussion would set me far ahead of where I'm at.

    TO be more precise that link frank posted is for Uber Area Lighting which is included in Daz Studio.

    I noticed their link is for Carrara. Is that program what they're asking help with?

    Or as the Carrara forum can be a bit scary for a New User, perhaps we need to see if we can persuade 3DAge to come visit here again.

    I got a clue when they said they went in to the "render room." I haven't done Cararra yet- is that an actual term? I also noticed it because as usual, I'm surfing for links to put in my links post and that's why the word Cararra leapt out at me. Otherwise, I would have missed it too. :)
    (Just wanted an excuse to use the smilie- missed the lil tykes SO much.)

    Lighting principles in Carrara are similar to those in DAZ Studio, or any other 3D application. You have point lights, spot lights, distant lights etc. Usually people will work with a 3 or 4 point lighting rig.

    The biggest difference between DAZ Studio and Carrara is that in DAZ Studio if there are no lights in the scene the render engine acts as if there is light coming from every point possible. This means there are no shadows, but if you render without lights at least you will see something. In Carrara if you have no lights in the scene your render will be dark (by default a new scene will contain 1 light and 1 camera, but those can be removed). If you have only one light in the scene the render will still be fairly dark. Imagine being in a room with only a single light source. That light source needs to be fairly bright to fill the room.

    One feature that can brighten a render in Carrara is indirect lighting. This is a render setting found in the Render Room under Global Illumination. Indirect essentially increases the number of light bounces the render engine calculates. This leads to a longer render time, but the render is ultimately more realistic (in that light bounces multiple times in the real world) and brighter.

    For DS uberEnvironment2 has an indirect lighting option, though it's pretty slow to render.
