How to make visual shaders work

Daz Studio 4.10 64-bit on a Mac.
OK, so I have tried several times to get things to work, but I am just completely flummoxed. I am trying to apply the visual shaders package to a figure in a scene, but nothing seems to work. I add a figure to the scene (in this case, Hitomi), then I select the figure and have all the surfaces selected. Then, I open the surfaces panel, and navigate to the Shaders submenu. There, there is a list of the visual shaders. I double click on one while holding the command key, and then accept the changes. Nothing happens. The preview is still in texture shaded form, and if I do a quick spot render to the window, it doesn't change. Shouldn't the preview change to something like a comic book style?
Seriously, I have no idea what the problem is here. It is very frustrating, although it comes no doubt from my complete ignorance regarding the way shaders act in DS.

Have you applied the Base shader of that package first before you try applying any of the settings? It's located in the top folder of "Visual Style Shaders".
Once you have applied it, you can apply one of the Presets.
And just a reminder that this is a 3Delight Shader set, so it will only work if you switch the render engine to 3Delight.
And it comes with a manual for further details: http://docs.daz3d.com/lib/exe/fetch.php/public/read_me/index/14398/14398_visual-style-shaders.pdf
