What are Clones in Daz?

In my stumbling about I have run across Clones several times now. What exactly are they? Fom what I am gathering there is a method of using them to make V4 and M4 clothing wearable by Gen8 characters. Am I understanding this correctly?

A clone is a shape fora figure that matches the shape of a source figure (and now clones can also include a pose) - it essentially tells DS what the target item was made to fit, so that the reverse transfomration can be applied to the target item to make it fit the new figure in the same way.

  • So essentially V4 clothing would fit a Gen8 figure? How does the software deal with the old V4 programming of the clothing does it convert it to fit the Gen8 figure or am I still sideways on this....why haven't the makers of older clothing then just converted them to Gen8 with this method and sold them as Gen8? I am sure I am missing some of the technicalities here.

    Autofit works in two steps:

    1. Alter the mesh so that its shape is right for your target figure => this is the step using the clone
    2. Automatically rig the converted mesh to fit the target figure => this step uses what is called a projection template, which basically applies a standard rigging for this type of item to the mesh

Depending on the item the result will be good or less good, since it's completely automatic and can't take specificities of that item into account. It's often good enough for your own use in an image, but that doesn't mean the quality of the conversion would be good enough to sell.

  • Ok I think I am beginning to understand this. Thanks for taking the time to explain it, Leana and Richard.
