Hi Sonja,
Well, it was the mirror surface settings. I'll post the settings (and the finished render--duh!) I used today, after work. It's now dead on sharp and DOF works as I wanted it to work. The re-render took forever, though. Because of the dark details, it was coming out grainy (Specular Rendering was enabled, too), so I really cranked up the settings on the Render Tab. What I'll post later today is over 10000 passes long. I actually stopped it when I got up this morning--it was still going. So, around 14 hours -- and I have a 1080ti! I suspect there is a lot of multipath stuff going on (fancy word for reflections and their effect on surrounding objects), and Spectral Rendering, too.
Now comes the odd thing.. I actually like the render better when the mirror thing wasn't fixed. It looks spookier, but I've got the DOF effect I wanted, now. DOF didn't work at all with the original mirror surface settings.
I know what you mean about DOF. Going to perspective view and adjusting is cumbersome sometimes--especially when viewing in Iray. DOF here (and in the selfie), was difficult because of the problem with the mirror.
This has been frustrating, but I learned a lot about surface settings for mirrors! :) Camera's, too.
I really like the character, too. I'm wondering when someone puts her on a piano in a red dress!?
Side note, I now have 27 Mousso characters!
Scott
Here's the finished render of the mirror thing... also, all the surface settings for the mirror. I think the big thing is this: The set came with image maps as part of the mirror. I deleted them all.
Yes it is kinda haunting!!!
May I make a sugestion to you about the mirror render if you really wanted to freak people out you could have put a ghost in her background like right behind her and have her expression show that she finally sees the ghost.
Kinda like in the movie Candy Man when the woman fist sees him in the mirror the look of horror that came across her face was priceless!
But I am a big time horror fan so make no mind of me if your not into hauntings and stuff.
Saphirewilds,
I see that you are a horror fan! That's cool. I may do what you suggest. It'd be cool. Maybe I could make orbs...
Scott
And along the lines of horror...
He was alone, late at night, in an unfamiliar part of town. He heard music coming from a club. Dark music. Hard music. He turned to his right. He saw a figure, probably a woman in the shadows, fog at her feet. She noticed him, or perhaps she lured him there? Then he heard, "Can I get a light?"
Her voice sounded sweet, not the kind of voice he would expect in a place like this.
"Sure." He replied, turning to the right and walking toward her.
"Thanks." The sweet voice filled his ears.
He felt compelled to continue to her yet part of him was afraid. Very afraid. Fear won. He stopped.
"I don't bite." The sweet voice called out to him, yet again.
He continued, his movements not completely under his control. When he finally saw her, he gasped. He saw her teeth.
Comments and suggestions are welcome. The closeup is a straight 4k render.
More Junk!
Redo of the closeup... Zoom in if possible.
Yet more junk!
Nice little story! The only thing that might make it creepier is well, more teeth lol. Nicely done, she is a beautiful character
LOL! Thanks, Sonja!
Here's the character in a long shot with different lighting.
Scott
Here's the closeup. I had to adjust the new lighting some because it worked only with the long shot.
Scott
Here is my opinion for what it is worth she needs to have that cigerette lit and smoking, she also needs some fog around her feet coming up to around her mid section.
I had fog in the first version... Dunno about the lit cigarette as the title of the picture is "Got a light?" I'm rendering a version with Volumetric lighting in it right now and it does appear foggy. So, we'll see what happens. I'm still learning this stuff. I spent over a two weeks learning how to use canvases, so that was a big thing. Dealing with the individual canvases in Photoshop was not easy for me as they're 32-bit floating point color--a lot of Photoshop features will only work with 16-bit and 8-bit color so that was frustrating.
I don't know how long this render is going to take.. it has been going just a bit under an hour right now with just over 2600 samples. So we'll see. :)
Thank you! I do enjoy suggestions and getting feedback. I love your work Saphirewild! :)
Scott
More junk! Volumetric lighiting, done a little differently.
Scott
That one is just perfect I think!
Thank you, Saphirewild! Thank you so much!
Here's the volumetric lighting closeup. You can see the teeth better in this one.
Scott
I like that last one quite a bit! (both the full length version and the close up)
Thank you Sonja! I think those two are among the top five renders I've ever done (not that I've done a ton). The full body render does have lighting positioned slightly differently. I'm just happy you like them.
I think the volumetric lighting makes a huge difference. The feel is exactly what I wanted when I first thought about this.
Thank you again, Sonja!
Scott
Somebody had to do it... Hair is messed up, but it's the closest style and it's imported from OBJ.
I've included the final version, too. Still got issues with the hair, but oh, well! Final is with softer lighting.
Scott
More junk!
Red!
Here's the Martini girl in a Porsche 911. I need to raise her up a bit in the car and redo the hand. I also need to move the light a bit to the right to eliminate the shadow her hair casts on the roof of the car. I spent a lot of time on this today.
I like it.
There is something wrong with the hair on the right side. In the B/W version looks OK.
The mirrors of the car need some work also.
Keep up the good work!
And a miror material.
has some dirty and bump, because no surface is perfect flat or without small scratces.
This is gorgeous Scott! Although I am partial to red...
Thank you for your comments! They're appreciate. I have to get a bit better at Photoshop before I tackle the post work on the Martini Girl. She needs some dirt on her face!
Scott
Thank you so much, Sonja! That means a lot! Since posting the original I did some more work on it. Here's where it stands, now.
Scott
More junk!
Scott
More junk... Erin. Lighting is pretty much through the window of the set with a distant light.
Scott
More junk! :)
Even more junk! Same character, different pose.
