Considering upgrading to DS4.6

I'm using 4.0 at the moment, but am considering upgrading. I have a couple of questions.

1. What are the bare minimum specs to run the upgraded DS 4.6. My current 4.0 runs pretty slow with my 2gig ram, would the upgraded DS even work at all?

2. What comes free with it? Just Genesis, or anything else? The 4.0 came with Genesis, some adventurer type clothes and props and a dragon.

3. Would all my old freebies (which I've spent a lot of time collecting) be usable with it, or am I going to have nothing to play with?

4. Is it possible to use a different drive other than "C" as the default?

Thanks to anyone who can answer any of these.

AS far as I am aware you should be fine specs wise have not really change from 4 to 4.6

    2. What comes free with it? Just Genesis, or anything else? The 4.0 came with Genesis, some adventurer type clothes and props and a dragon.
The free items have not changed but its now a separate download file (that you have to download or genesis is missing) but ther is now also an updated version with genesis 2.

    3. Would all my old freebies (which I've spent a lot of time collecting) be usable with it, or am I going to have nothing to play with?
yes I have freebies going back from when I first started and they still work

    4. Is it possible to use a different drive other than "C" as the default?
Yes I use my D:\ drive as my default you just have to do a custom install and define it when it asks.

Thanks to anyone who can answer any of these.

Yes, as Neil said, all the free stuff from DS4.0 is still included, but it is in a separate download called Genesis Starter Essentials. You also get Genesis 2 Female for free...that's another separate download called Genesis Female 2 Starter Essentials. You'll probably want to install both.

DS4.6 does have the same system requirements as DS4.0, and in fact should probably run faster (personally I noticed very significant speed improvements when upgrading my old system from DS4.0 to DS4.5, though I don't have experience going straight from 4.0 to 4.6). Results will depend on your system, of course...anecdotally some people with older systems have complained that DS4.6 didn't run as smoothly, but those should be exceptions rather than the rule.

Thanks for the info, guys. I will soon be upgrading and no doubt pestering the forum with even more technical questions!
    Cheers.

I have a flip side to ungrading which might make you thing twice.

DS4.0 gave me no issues with running 2GB of memory however DS4.5 + does. I have gone back to DS3A for bigger scenes as DS4.6 won't render a biggish scene without crashing. Other poeple have found the same but not all. I suppose it depends on your system.

If you still tend to upgarde then uninstall CMS via the Add/Remove programs in the control panel if using Windows first before installing DS4.6. You don't need to uninstall DS4.0 as DS4.6 will do that for you.

This was my experience trying to use DAZ 4.5 on a Windows XP system with 2 GB. I could get the Fiery Genesis tutorial to render, but almost anything more complicated would run out of memory and crash. DAZ had other issues with that system too. The OpenGL version in the graphics card was not really compatible with DAZ. That caused frequent crashes. DAZ 4.5 seemed to run fine on a different machine that had a 64-bit Win 7, 4 GB and NVIDA graphics card.

I suspect a lot of memory limitations depend on what junk and crapwear is installed on your system. This may be why different people have different experiences. If you uninstall all the junk applications you don't really need that are always running and using memory, that should help.

You can get one free standalone 3Delight license directly from 3Delight. You should then be able to render larger scenes without the DAZ window running.

I run a clean computer with no crapware at all. I think the difference between DS4.0 and DS4.5+ is the updated render engine, Sub-Ded Genesis and Autofitting takes more resources but that is just an educated guess.

I had wondered if something like this might be the case. Thanks for letting me know.
If I use my D drive as my defailt for 4.6 instead of the C drive I use at the moment, would I be able to leave CMS and DS 4.0 on the C drive instead of uninstalling them so I can go back to it if 4.6 doesn't work?

Well, considering that my computer is old and runs slow some of the time (even for simple browsing), I'm starting to doubt that 4.5 or 4.6 is going to be an option for me.
The main reason I wanted to upgrade is not for new/extra features or better rendering. It's because people are making less freebies that work in 4.0 than they used to (I rely on freebies due to a non-existant cashflow), because they've upgraded, which is fair enough. That wouldn't be a problem except my version of 4.0 doesn't have the transfer utility, so I can't make upgraded stuff work.
Although I should point out I'm grateful for the free stuff I do have, if not for people being generous I wouldn't be doing any of this.

As far as I know you can't do that sorry.

My understanding is that it isn't recommended, but it may be possible. Haven't tried it myself, but here's a relevant quote from FeralFey, taken from this thread.

    FeralFey said:
And just to let you know, you can keep a version of DS4 running, but it has to be on a different drive altogether. I know many content creators who do this, especially when they are in mid-build and can't entirely switch over to the newest iteration of the software. But it does have to be on a separate drive, as DS doesn't like to play with previous iterations of the same generation of itself.

I've decided I'm going to postpone upgrading for the time being. I'm not going to risk screwing up/losing my ds4.0 for a version that might not even work on my system. Not worth the risk/time/effort.
Thanks for your wisdom as usual, people.
