Is it possible to use two differnt content folder and swith between them ?

edited July 2013 in New Users

Hello everybody.
I have this idea and i would like to ask if is possible and what issues i can have.
Actually i have one content folder, which is on a separarte drive.
I called it DAZ3D and installed the content inside it, i cofigured DAZ to read that folder and everything work fine.

Now i woul like to make a second folder to test new contents, without messing my actual folder.

So my question is can i create another content folder, then when i lunch Daz choose the path of "test" folder then switch back to regular folder, without messing up something ?

Thanks so much
Kind regards
Jack

The fast answer is "yes". Not only can you create as many content folders as you like, even making a complete copy of the original, but you can switch between them or have them all showing at once. The long answer is that you would have to go into preferences and add/remove the content directories as needed each time if you are wanting to switch between them and possibly even having to remove orphaned references from your Smart Content. Turning off or deleting a content directory reference in the content library won't actually delete the directory from your machine, only the access you get to it from Daz Studio. So, in essence, you can enable or disable directories as you wish, it's just not a simple, quick process and not what I would call convenient.

    Hello
So let's see if i got well, i make an example :
Primary folder content mapped in Daz
    d:\\daz3d-Primary.
    Test folder
    d:\\daz3d-Test

I open Daz then go to Edit --->Prefernces-->Content Library and add the folder: d:\\daz3d-Test and remove d:\\daz3d-Primary.
Then by restarting Daz i should have both contents right ?

When i want to take away d:\\daz3d-Test same tihing in Preferences
But i have also to go to Content Library then select Connted DB Maintenance and flag Remove Un mapped ... and Remove Orphaned...

Then i have back my Daz with only my d:\\daz3d-Primary
And i must do it every time i want to switch between content is it right ??

So if i understand well, you instead would simply avoid switching and just keep all folders mapped, and remove them only for specific reasons.

    Thanks so much
    Kind Regards
    Jack

That sounds right to me, Jack. I add content directories all the time when I am creating new content, then delete them later when I have finished with my work. I usually have to go in and remove the orphaned references, but not always. Also, you don't need to restart DAZ after following these steps, the results are instant. Although on further thought, restarting might help with needing to remove orphans and unmapped directories. You have the right idea, though.

I'm wondering why you don't want both directories to show? Is it because you want to make sure that only the stuff you are working on/testing is available so that you don't accidentally apply something from your original content? Not being nosey, just curious.

Edit: Wait a second, I just re-read your previous post and my answer needs to be clarified. If you go to Edit:Preferences and add the test directory and remove the primary directory, you will not have both when you restart DAZ Studio, only the test directory. If you wish to see both, you must have both loaded in the preferences menu. However, as soon as you remove a directory from there, it will not show in your content library until you add it back in.

It's because i don't want to mix up things and is difficult to me to find content.
So i would like to avoid troubles with my original folder.
The purpose was close to what you said, i would like to test new Gen 2 figure but i don't want to mix it with others things.

My fault sorry i edited the message, i'm quite a mess with english anyway i think you understand well.
And you are right anyway i can simply copy my Primary folder rename it as Test folder so i have all contents, nut the idea was to have like two or more DAZ by swithing contents.
As you said for on project i need just some things, so i can create a folder with only what i need inside and i should have less trouble finding items.

    Kind Regards
    Jack

If you add both directories and keep them both mapped then it's easy enough to find your content using the Content Library tab. For example I have 2 directories mapped \My Daz Library for the default content I download from Daz using the DIM and \My Daz Freebies for free stuff I download for elsewhere.

To see only freebies I just go to the Content Library tab and select Daz Studio Format->My Daz Freebies and browse for the item I'm looking for.

See the problem it's not to understand from Freebies to others.
I was looking right now at Brian DeviantArt works
    Take this : http://brischloss.deviantart.com/art/LuxTest-362965316
This is exactly what i mean for testing.
I too have luxrender and still din't try anything so what i need is learn things, without to much tings that distract me.
In the above exemple you can use a folder with luxrender genesis and one dress.
So i don't need to have Morph or others stuff.
This is what i would like to do.

    Kind regards

Luxrender is a plugin that needs to be installed so it's not something you'd have in a library.

You could create a separate library that just has the content you want in it but you'll have to go through and figure out what all needs to be pulled out to get Genesis to load.

For what you're describing a simpler solution might be to do what I'm assuming Slosh did. Create a basic scene with the background, block and a posed and dressed figure and save it. Then start playing with the lighting and shaders and testing Lux

If having all of the posing/shaping/content etc. tabs is distracting you can hide them to get them out of your way.

I don't see anything on that page that requires a separate library.

    Hello
I was talking of Luxus sorry i wrong the product name.
By the way if you read at the begin i alredy explained what i would like to do.
Test the new genesis 2 so in my view it's already ,a good reason to create a separate folder.
I need to test Luxus i need to test Victoria 6, Genesis 2 Morph etc...

I know that i can close a panel, what bother me it's having tons of things that i don't need.

This is why i opened this tread.

    kind Regards

The quick and easy way to close the side panels is to click on the highlighted tab, for example the Scene or Parameters tabs in the first screenshot.

The other way is to click on the little double arrow thing that's circled in the first screenshot. This will get you what you see in the second screenshot.

Oh, I've also switched from the default layout and style so your screen may not look exactly like mine. If you want to duplicate it I'm using Darkside as the style and City Limits for the window layout.

To change the style go to Window->Style->Select Style and choose Darkside or whichever looks like it will work best for you.
To change the layout go to Window->Workspace->Select Layout and choose City Limits or whatever you like best.

You can experiment with the layout and once you get something that works for you save it as a new preset.

Ok the quick answer to your direct question off easy switchable content folders is NO. The only choice you have is having separate content folders mapped all the time or as already suggested above is to manually remove one and load the other each time.

I don't see the issue of having them mapped all the time. The Content Library Pane (not Smart Content) is the best way to locate your tests quickly without the main content from getting in the way. Smart Content will lump them all together.

This is how I do all my content, over 30 content folders now all mapped all the same time. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/11176/#160909
