Shadows Using iRay Render

Hi everyone,

I'm using Daz3d 4.10 and I want to use the iRay renderer. I've been able to light my scene in iRay using 'Scene Only' but the light doesn't cast shadows. Can someone here suggest a solution to this. In the lights photometrics I've got the Lumininence Flux up to 370000 lumens and it lights my character properly, and I've got the Temperature up to 10000. Still no shadow.

Thanks

Do you have a ground plane? In Iray, you only have a ground if you use Dome&Scene or Sun&Sky. If you use Scene only, you will have to rely on whatever ground you put in the image. If ground shadow is what you are looking for, that is.

Also, your light settings are way too high. The temperature is used for the colour of the light.

I'd also recommend the tutorial videos, if you haven't already looked at them: https://www.daz3d.com/help/help-daz-3d-video-tutorials

I have been able to get shadows by choosing "Finite dome with ground" But it really does take a long time for an iRay render to complete. Its still not complete

Well, if you have an NVidea card, this will speed up the render. If you are rendering with your CPU, you are looking at glacial rendering times, depending what's in your scene.

Also, you don't need to wait for your render to reach the "complete" status. That is just a cutoff mark, if you have reached a certain render time, number of iterations, or quality percentage (whichever of the three comes first). If the render looks good, you can cancel it at any time, even if it hasn't "completed".

The simple answer is that if you want shadows, you need something to cast shadows on. It works with 'Finite dome with ground' because the engine is putting the floor in for you (at location Y = 0). Put in some scenery and your character will start casting shadows as normal. It's worth remembering that Iray treats light realistically, so consider your light placement carefully when making your scenes, because it can make a world of difference to the final image.
